The project aimed to ensure that the mostly engineering students not only learn about sustainability in theory but also engage in its practical implementation. Their original target was to collect 1,000 bottles over a three-month period – a goal they significantly exceeded, demonstrating how a simple initiative can become a strong community effort involving both students and staff at the International Studies Center.

The proceeds from returning the bottles will contribute to the care of the animals living in the zoo. The handover took place on Saint Nicholas Day, giving international students a memorable opportunity to experience a characteristic Hungarian tradition while taking part in a meaningful voluntary activity. After the symbolic donation, participants also joined an informative guided tour focusing on conservation and environmental awareness.
Dr Reza Hemmati, Director of the PTE International Studies Center, highlighted: “It is essential for us that our students gain practical experience in sustainability and understand its real impact. I am proud of our community – students and colleagues alike – for their dedication to this initiative. Exceeding the original goal and collaborating with the Pécs Zoo illustrate how a university project can create genuine value while strengthening community ties.”

Project lead teacher Ágota Laczkó noted that the 1,367 collected bottles are not only the result of conscious everyday actions but also carry symbolic meaning, recalling the founding year of the University of Pécs. Fanni Navreczki, Program Manager of the PTE Green University Program, added that sustainability becomes truly embedded in university life when students experience firsthand how their individual choices can shape their surroundings.
