The University of Pécs (PTE) has once again achieved an outstanding result in the 2025 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, placing 29th among 1,745 universities from 105 countries. It also maintains its leading position in Hungary, remaining the country’s “greenest” university. The results further strengthen the institution’s role among universities committed to sustainability and reinforce its ambition to deliver tangible progress across all areas of sustainable development.

Dr. Tamás Fedeles, Vice-Rector for Education at PTE, highlighted:
“Education plays a key role in shaping sustainable thinking. A systemic approach that responds to global expectations is now a basic requirement for the competitiveness of Hungarian higher education. We are shaping a university where students not only gain knowledge but also understand their responsibility in shaping the future. The University of Pécs increasingly embeds sustainability across its programmes—whether in engineering, economics or the social sciences. Our goal is for all our students to graduate with a modern, practice-oriented mindset aligned with the expectations of a rapidly changing world.”
Dr. Katalin Szili, member of the Board of Trustees of the Universitas Quinqueecclesiensis Foundation, emphasised:
“In recent years, the University of Pécs has developed a strategy in which sustainability permeates the entire operation of the institution. Since the model change, it has become clear that the alignment of education, research and institutional development has brought tangible qualitative improvements. The establishment of the Sustainable Development Coordination Council has further strengthened cooperation between the various fields, initiating developments that increase both operational efficiency and environmental responsibility. Our aim is for every university unit to contribute to conscious, long-term sustainable operations within its own domain.”

István Decsi, Chancellor of PTE, added:
“Sustainability plays a prominent and guiding role in the long-term strategic goals of the University. We aim for our achievements in this field to extend beyond the institution itself and serve as useful examples for economic actors as well. In our partnerships, the primary criterion is that they provide concrete, measurable progress—whether in reducing environmental impact, strengthening responsible operations or using resources more efficiently. We firmly believe that a modern university advances when technological innovation, responsible management and professional cooperation are treated as a unified whole, and PTE is now clearly at the forefront of this approach.”
According to the 2025 ranking, the world’s “greenest” university—maintaining its top position from last year—is Wageningen University & Research in the Netherlands, followed by University College Cork (Ireland) and Nottingham Trent University (United Kingdom).
