Dear University Citizens,
Pécs will host a stage of the Tour de Hongrie this year. The University of Pécs will be present at the event, which is almost our duty as a cycling-friendly university. The Tour de Hongrie cycling race between Kaposvár and Pécs will take place on 12 May.
Pécs has a long history of cycling, as the Pécs Cycling Association was founded in 1892. The first road race between Budapest and Pécs was organized in 1894, and in 1896 the Velodrome - a 333-meter oval track with a capacity of 500 spectators and a covered grandstand - was officially opened in the area between the Zsolnay Factory and Basamalom.
The Hungarian cycling race, the Tour de Hongrie, was held in Pécs for the first time in 1927 when we were hosting both the starting and finishing stages of the race. The last time we hosted the Tour was in 2004, but the 2023 Tour de Hongrie - which has been classified as a ProSeries race, meaning it is now among the second most prestigious races in the world - will take the program to a whole new level. Twenty-two teams have entered in advance, including several WorldTeam teams and the Hungarian National Team as well.
