This year, six German cities - Bochum, Duisburg, Essen, Mülheim an der Ruhr, Hagen, and Berlin - will host the 2025 FISU Summer World University Games, where the University of Pécs will also be represented. The international multisport event will take place between July 16 and 27, drawing approximately 8,500 university athletes and official delegates from 150 countries to compete in 18 sports disciplines.
The oath-taking ceremony for the Hungarian delegation to the 32nd World University Games was held on July 8 in the afternoon in Budapest.
The Summer World University Games (Universiade) is one of the world’s largest multisport events. Its significance has grown in recent years, as more and more sports use it as a qualifying platform for the Olympics or world championships. Each year, Hungary is represented by 100 to 150 athletes at the international event.
The University of Pécs has supported the participation of several athletes through the National University Sports Team Program, enabling them to compete in five sports (table tennis, athletics, judo, basketball, and badminton) with 14 athletes and 3 team leaders who are Pécs alumni.

The oath-taking ceremony, organized by the Hungarian University and College Sports Federation (MEFS), took place at Ötkert Club in Budapest. Speaking on behalf of the young athletes was Sára Mátó, a bronze medalist hurdler from the 2023 Games, who recited the official athlete's pledge.
"The renewed Hungarian higher education system is now more student- and sport-friendly than ever, which is one of the reasons why a record number of Hungarian athletes are participating in this year’s World University Games," said Annamária Pósánné Rácz, Deputy State Secretary for Higher Education and Adult Education at the Ministry of Culture and Innovation, during her welcome speech.
She also highlighted that outstanding athletic achievements are now recognized during university admissions - 71 students were admitted to higher education in 2024 based on their athletic performance.
"Students who choose an athletic career face a double burden, which is why it is vital to provide them with a supportive environment that enables them to thrive both in sports and academics," the Deputy State Secretary emphasized.
