Official visit to Pécs by Canada: A dialogue between diplomacy and academic excellence

On Tuesday, 10 February, the University of Pécs (PTE) enjoyed a day dedicated to international cooperation with a visit from His Excellency François Lafrenière, Canadian Ambassador to Hungary. Accompanied by Mr. Florian Leuprecht, Political Advisor, and Mr. Tamás Papp, the Ambassador spent the day immersing himself in the academic landscape of Pécs. This courtesy visit aimed to strengthen bilateral ties and explore new synergies between Canada and Hungary's oldest university.

The institutional focus of the visit was a high-level meeting with the University Rector, Dr. Attila Miseta, and the Director of International Centre, Dr. István Tarrósy. In an atmosphere that was both solemn and warm, the leaders discussed the internationalisation of PTE. The Ambassador highlighted the growing interest of Canadian institutions in Hungarian research centres, suggesting concrete avenues for the mobility of researchers and students, particularly in the fields of science and technology.

The delegation then visited the Faculty of Humanities and Social (BTK). In the Vargha Damján Hall, the Ambassador gave a keynote speech entitled ‘Canada's Evolving Role in a Changing World.’ Before an audience of students and professors, he outlined Canada's strategic vision for addressing contemporary global challenges. Emphasising the values of multilateralism and diversity, Mr. Lafrenière engaged in a direct dialogue with students, responding precisely to questions on current geopolitics and the role of transatlantic alliances.

Although the delegation returned to Budapest at the end of the day, this visit left a lasting impression. It helped transform diplomatic intentions into concrete projects. In meeting with both the university administration at the rector's office and students in the lecture hall, His Excellency François Lafrenière reaffirmed that the future of Canadian-Hungarian relations rests on education, innovation and knowledge sharing between our two nations.
