New scientific and educational documentary series within the EDUC Alliance

Films for digital education by the University of Pécs

A three-part English-Hungarian scientific and educational documentary series about the Jurassic – Cretaceous geology of the Mecsek Mountains has been made within the framework of the European Digital UniverCity (EDUC) Alliance.

Within the framework of the EDUC European University Alliance – a common educational platform initiated by the collaboration of eight European universities – the University of Pécs supports the development of common high-quality educational projects, along with preparation of English- and Hungarian-language digital educational teaching and learning materials. In the summer of 2021, with the collaboration of the UnivTV (Universitas Television) and University of Pécs Associate Professor Dr. László Bujtor, the Faculty of Sciences’ first scientific and educational documentary series has been made on the Mesozoic geology of the Mecsek Mountains.

The 15-minute episodes of the series introduce the Jurassic-Cretaceous geological developments of the Mecsek Mountains and their international aspects. The films are not only available to students of EDUC partner universities in English, but also to the Hungarian-speaking viewers interested in earth sciences – as they present the unique geological values of the mountains based on the latest research data. Beyond geology, the series also covers other curiosities of hydrology, geomorphology, and paleontology, which make the Mecsek Mountains an interesting and important area of research – even in European terms.

The Mecsek mountains’ unique values are shown through still and moving cameras, as well as drone recordings, while viewers are assisted in understanding the presented phenomena with continuous narration. By presenting sedimentary, volcanic and erosion processes, as well as rock samples, the viewers can better understand the processes taking place 130 to 160 million years ago when the site of the Mecsek Mountains was a subtropical ocean.
