Global security challenges, national minority rights, armed conflicts, and the legal impacts of artificial intelligence (AI) take centre stage at the ‘International EU Law Horizons Conference’, which opened on 28 May 2026 at the University of Pécs, Faculty of Law (PTE ÁJK). The aim of this newly launched international scientific conference is to become a defining annual professional forum for the region.
At the opening ceremony, dr Katalin Szili, member of the Board of Trustees of the Universitas Quinqueecclesiensis Foundation (UQA), which operates the university, welcomed the participants. She highlighted that international law is now a living, continuously evolving framework that directly influences everyday security and human dignity. In her speech, she emphasised the importance of minority protection in preserving social peace, as well as the need for a proper balance between technological development and legislation in the age of AI.
The professional programme was opened by dr Ágoston Csanád Mohay, Dean of the Faculty of Law, who pointed out that the title of the conference (Horizons) is highly fitting, as modern lawyers must constantly look ahead amidst geopolitical uncertainties and the technological explosion. He added that the event provides an excellent opportunity for open, international-level academic dialogue.
The background of the event was presented by the main organisers, dr Bence Kis Kelemen and dr István Szijártó, lecturers at the Department of International and European Law. They explained that, inspired by successful regional models in neighbouring countries, they decided to fill a gap both nationally and within the faculty by establishing such a large-scale event. Their primary goal is to provide an inspiring platform that lays the long-term foundations for international research and educational partnerships.
During the intensive two-day programme, Hungarian and international experts will discuss the latest research findings across various sessions, including dedicated human rights panels, as well as sections addressing humanitarian law and digitalisation.
