She became famous for her detailed accounts of the lives of wild chimpanzees in East Africa. On 1 October, at 7 p.m. Hungarian time, the Jane Goodall Institute announced that the world-famous researcher, ethologist and Honorary Doctor of the University of Pécs had died peacefully in her sleep. “Dr. Goodall’s discoveries as an ethologist revolutionized science, and she was a tireless advocate for the protection and restoration of our natural world,” the statement read.
Dr Goodall had been an Honorary Doctor of the University of Pécs since 10 March 2005. In 2010, she visited Pécs at the university’s invitation. In her lecture she emphasised the idea that “We have only one planet”, calling attention to our shared responsibility for the future of the Earth and for animal protection. In 2021 she personally greeted graduating PTE students in a video message.
The researcher was 91 years old.
