Dr. Krisztián Jáksó (UP, Clinical Centre, Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care) talked about home care of Covid-patients in an interview made by the Universitas Television. Based on his advice, we gathered what precautions are needed and what you should have available at home if someone catches Covid, but is not so sick to need hospital care. (In this latter case, you have to follow the doctor’s orders and cooperate with the nurses.)

Consult the Covid Hotline of the University of Pécs (+36 30 577 3764) first!

If you live with others, try to separate yourselves from them.

Here is the list of items:

  • Thermometer (if you are older than 18 years, you do not need to reduce your fever below a body temperature of 38° C! Fever below 38° C should only be treated in children.)
  • Fever reducer and pain relief medication (use only at persistent body temperatures above 38° C! Medicines containing ibuprofen, metamizole or paracetamol can be useful.)
  • Cough suppressants (take them only if the cough becomes excessive)
  • Vitamin D
  • Vitamin C (3 x 1000 mg daily)
  • Vitamin B
  • Towels (make sure that no one else uses them, but you!)
  • Hand towels (make sure that no one else uses them, but you!)
  • Disinfectant (for surface cleaning, especially on objects used by others. It is important to clean the light switches, handles, door-handles. It is especially important to clean the toilet, as Covid-19 can be transmitted via urine and faeces!)
  • Rubber gloves (for surface cleaning)
  • Virucidal hand sanitizer (for when you are not able to wash your hands thoroughly or to clean the touch screen of an uncoated mobile phone)
  • Paper handkerchief (Fabric handkerchiefs are an eco-friendly option, but make sure to wash and iron them after each use)
  • Garbage bag (Use drawstring, or otherwise sealable bags if possible. Collect used gloves, disposable masks, paper towels used for cleaning, separately from others’ rubbish)
  • Fabric masks (please put them on, when you are in common areas)
  • Blankets, pillows - resting is important, as the coronavirus causes fatigue. Rest and sleep a lot and TURN ON YOUR STOMACH often, because it relieves the lower parts of the lungs)

  • Computer (work, study, entertainment, communication)
  • Book (needless to say why)
  • Iron (experts advise to iron clothes, bedding, fabric masks at high temperatures)
  • Washing machine (clean your clothes on at least 60° C, but rather 90° C)
  • Paper towel (for surface cleaning. Using fabric wipers is an environment friendly solution, but make sure to wash and iron them after each use)
  • Time (take the time and allow yourself to make a complete recovery!)
