Stargazing on the ‘Sea of Grapes’

The Research Institute of Viticulture and Oenology, University of Pécs (PTE SZBKI) is organizing a unique event for the Perseids peak on 11-12 August!

August is the month of shooting stars, and the Perseids are expected to be the most beautiful sight. This year, the meteor shower will peak on 11-12 August. It will be a full moon, so due to its brightness “only” the brightest meteors, 20-30 of the 60-80 shooting stars per hour will be visible to the naked eye. Experts say that it is important to look at the sky in a less light-polluted area to really see something. The Szentmiklós Hill of the Research Institute of Viticulture and Oenology of the University of Pécs might be the ideal spot for this, as it is located on the edge of the city, but relatively far from the streetlights of Pécs.

The vineyard, which provides the most beautiful panoramic view of Pécs, will be open to the public on 11 and 12 August from 8 pm. "The event will not take the classic form, so this time there will be no lecture by a sommelier. There will be four stands where you can taste selected wines to decide which one you will buy for the Perseids 2022” - said Szabolcs Szölősi, colleague of SZBKI. He added: “The selection will include rosé, dry cirfandli, dry red (Universitas cuvée) and my personal favorite: Zenit, which is a light white wine!"

Closing time is planned for midnight.
