The Times Higher Education (THE) published their first ranking assessing the sustainable development goals of the UN last year, comparing the environmental, social and financial impact of universities. This year, the University of Pécs managed to achieve the prestigious 301-400th place out of 767 universities of 85 countries, and in terms of climate action it was ranked 45th in the THE Impact Rankings 2020, which is an outstanding result.

The Times Higher Education ranking published on 22 April compared the performance of universities based on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) that were adopted by all the of the United Nations Member States in 2015. This year, six Hungarian higher education institutions entered the ranking, out of which the University of Pécs achieved the distinguished 3rd place. The first university of Hungary achieved outstanding results in the following three SDG-s:

  • climate action
  • good health and wellbeing
  • decent work and economic growth.

“The universities competed along 17 sustainable development goals, out of which

the University of Pécs achieved good results in many categories.

The final score of a higher education institution has been calculated by combining its top three scores out of the first 16 sustainable development goals with its score in SDG 17, partnerships for the goals. In terms of the last SDG, the University of Pécs has to develop its partnerships and pay more attention to its social responsibilities, and it would make sense to communicate these goals more efficiently in education as well as towards society. However, we aim for a continuous development in all areas” – emphasized Dr. Dániel Kehl, assistant professor of the Faculty of Business and Economics, University of Pécs.
