The Ambassador of Brazil, Susan Kleebank, and the Under-Secretary Daniel Hirtz visited the Rector's Office of the University of Pécs (UP) on 28 November. The diplomats were received by Dr. Attila Miseta, Rector of the University of Pécs, and Péter Árvai, Deputy Director of the International Centre of the university.

The main focus of the meeting was on the promotion of Brazilian-Hungarian academic and research cooperation, which the South American country would be happy to support, especially in terms of stimulating academic exchanges. Brazil is one of UP's destinations for international student recruitment, so the current visit could expand future contacts, not only in terms of student recruitment but also in terms of cooperation with research institutions.

The discussions also revealed further opportunities for cooperation, particularly in the fields of medicine, health, and natural sciences. The diplomats also expressed interest in the Research Institute of Viticulture and Oenology, where they see concrete opportunities for cooperation, particularly in the area of varietal improvement.

In the context of the International Seasons programme coordinated by the International Centre of the University of Pécs, the Brazilian side brought several colourful and interesting ideas. There have been several waves of immigrants from Hungary (second half of the 19th century, the 1930s crisis, the world wars and the 1956 revolution) to the South American country, where the number of Hungarians is estimated up to 100,000. With the help of the Brazilian Embassy, we can also learn about the stories of our compatriots who have gone abroad and the intertwining of the two cultures, through exhibitions and programmes.
