On 2 November 2026, the University of Pécs (PTE) strengthened its international ties following an official visit by the Belgian Ambassador to Hungary, H.E. Jeroen Vergeylen. The diplomat visited Pécs upon the invitation of the ELSA Pécs student association to deliver a presentation on the Belgian federal system. Taking advantage of the occasion, he also met with the Rector of the university, Prof. Dr. Adrián Fábián, and the Dean of the Faculty of Law (PTE ÁJK), Dr. habil. Ágoston Csanád Mohay, to discuss enhancing academic relations.
A key topic of discussion was the university's return to European exchange and research programs such as Erasmus+ and Horizon Europe. Both parties expressed their delight over this resolution, which paves the way for renewed student exchanges and scientific collaboration starting from the upcoming academic year.
Although Pécs hosts over 6,000 international students and maintains existing links with Belgian institutions such as KU Leuven, the University of Liège, HOGENT, and Thomas More, the number of Belgian students remains small. The University of Pécs is eager to broaden this cooperation. The Faculty of Law under Dean Mohay is particularly keen on establishing new partnerships for its English-taught programs, guest lectures, and potential joint degrees. Additionally, the German-language programs at Pécs present attractive opportunities for students from the German-speaking community in Belgium.
To accelerate exchanges, the university offers flexible arrangements for visiting Belgian professors, including hybrid research and teaching frameworks. Ambassador Jeroen Vergeylen committed to actively promoting the University of Pécs among Belgian universities and through the Flemish representation office in Budapest.
