To produce the Emerging Economies University Rankings, THE takes the performance indicators that underpin their World University Rankings and customise them to reflect the characteristics of the higher education institutions in emerging economies.

THE ranks universities based on scores from teaching (learning environment), international outlook (staff, students and research), research (volume, income, and reputation), citations (research influence), and industry income and also analyzes the features and priorities of universities from emerging economies, for example, their connections with the industry and their international perspectives.

This year, 533 universities from 47 countries or regions are included in the ranking (in 2019, 442 universities were ranked). Just like last year, the list is dominated by Chinese institutions (Tsinghua University, Peking University, Zhejiang University) again. In the 2020 ranking, there are new entrants from Saudi Arabia and New Zealand.
