Citizens of the European Economic Area (EEA), which includes the European Union member states as well as Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein, along with citizens of Switzerland, do not require a visa to enter Hungary. Entry is permitted with a valid travel document (such as a passport) or an official national identity card.
These individuals are entitled to reside in Hungary for up to 90 days from the date of their entry without any special authorization. However, if their stay exceeds 90 days—such as for pursuing full-time studies at a Hungarian higher education institution—they must take further administrative steps to ensure their stay is legal.
Residence Registration for Students
EEA and Swiss nationals who plan to stay in Hungary for more than 90 days for educational purposes are required to register their residence status. This registration must take place within 93 days from the date of arrival in the country.
There are two ways to complete the registration:
In-person at the regional office of the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing (NDGAP), or
Online via the official immigration platform: Enter Hungary
During the registration process, students must provide the following documents:
A valid travel document or identity card
A certificate of admission issued by a Hungarian higher education institution offering accredited programs, or any other document verifying their student status
Proof of accommodation in Hungary (e.g., rental contract, dormitory certificate)
Health insurance valid in Hungary (EU citizens may use their European Health Insurance Card)
Proof of sufficient financial means to support their stay (this may include scholarship confirmation or bank statements)

Registration Certificate
Upon successful registration, students receive a registration certificate, which serves as proof of their legal residence in Hungary. This document does not have an expiry date, but remains valid only in conjunction with a valid travel document or personal ID.
Students must also notify the authorities of any changes to their personal data, accommodation, or educational status. Failure to comply with these requirements may result in administrative fines or complications with their legal status in Hungary.
For more information, students are encouraged to visit the official immigration website.
