At the University of Pécs, you may study American Studies at the MA level. The Institute of English Studies teaches the newly registered program providing students with a comprehensive knowledge of American society, history, politics, and culture with a special study track in North American literatures and literary studies. As defined by the curriculum, studies for the MA in American Studies consist of two years of core courses and electives, and the public defense of a thesis demonstrating the student’s original research in a selected field of American Studies.

Our program in American Studies offers a comprehensive overview of the field at the graduate level. Students are required to take core courses in the different subfields of American Studies and in related areas such as cultural studies and cultural history, the social sciences and research methodologies, historical linguistics, popular and visual culture, etc. All these pave the way for the individual research students are required to undertake for their thesis in North American literature and literary studies in an interdisciplinary manner. The thesis supervised by our colleagues at the Institute of English Studies is to be handed in in the fourth semester and defended in order to earn an MA in American Studies.

Skype interview
The interview takes about 15-20 minutes. During the interview, applicants are asked to talk about their previous research and their current plan and interests. The main goal of the online meeting is for the applicants to demonstrate their proficiency in English, to showcase their ability to conduct research as well as to share their scientific interest with the interviewers, so they become able to make an informed decision about the acceptance to our multicultural and open-minded academic community.
 

The applicant has to submit the following documents by uploading them to the online application portal of the University of Pécs:

  • Certified and translated (if originals are not in English) copy of BA diploma in English Studies (major or minor) - with transcript of records
  • Minimum condition for entry to the Master’s degree program: at least 38 credits in the field of English and American Studies.  
  • Certified and translated (if originals are not in English) copy of school transcripts showing satisfactory completion of senior high school.
  • Europass CV in English
  • Motivation letter (introduction plus field of interest, etc.) in 3000 to 3500 characters.
  • Copy of valid passport or national ID
  • Medical certificate, (please fill the document and attach the serologic test results)
    • vaccination card (showing that you are immunized against HEP B)
    • HEP A/B/C test*
    • HIV test*
    • Chest X-ray: Please attach the chest’s X-ray result (not the film!) in English/Hungarian! (not older than 3 months)
  • Transfer receipt of the EUR 140 application fee
  • Acceptable online language exams:
    • Duolingo online exam from score 135
    • IELTS Indicator from score 7
  • Official copy of the following language exam certificates:  
  • Entrance Exam (personally or via Skype)

*Please note: tests have to be taken within a year!
