Jorely Manzano Soria

"The Institute of Geography and Earth Sciences of the University of Pécs has offered me a lot of opportunities that are beneficial for my future career. I was able to apply what I have learned in theory into practice when I was given the chance to participate in international scientific workshops in Italy and Poland, related to the field of geosciences. My personal and professional networks have expanded. Now, I am proud to say that I have been asked to collaborate and contribute to an ongoing scientific work with the experts I've made connections with. Moreover, the professors are dedicated to making learning more fun and easy - they exert every effort to not let anyone be left behind. I have met people of different cultures and I started to appreciate the beauty of diversity. Stepping out of my comfort zone made me feel like a fish out of water at first, but never have I ever thought that taking the big step of pursuing my studies in a place 9,900 km away from the Philippines would mold me into a wiser and stronger person."

I am Jorely Soria, a student at the Institute of Geography and Earth Sciences of the Faculty Sciences, with a developing interest in intellectual investigations that will help in preserving the environment and managing the society. As an international student ambassador, I aim to serve as a liaison between the foreign students and university in order to source any problem, or need that arises, and finally, promote a positive culture that will encourage greater participation by international students in both extracurricular and curricular activities. Pécs has a lot to offer, and I would be more than happy to help you navigate through it.

Career opportunities

Opportunities to enhance my technical skills have been presented to me by the university. I was able to participate on two training programs (Torun Natural Sciences Program and SYStem Project: Share Your Soils) conducted in Poland and Italy respectively, which were both fully-funded, and most importantly, had let me expand my existing knowledge and skills by collaborating with experts in the field of geosciences.

Recommendations for future students

Take that leap of faith, and your future self will thank you. Be willing to learn new things, embrace the differences, and spread kindness. Never be afraid to approach the people that you know can provide guidance and help, be it in terms of personal or professional life.
