7,500 freshmen have started their studies at the University of Pécs in the 2021/2022 academic year. They were in the focus of the Ceremonial Senate Meeting held at the Dr. Halasy-Nagy József Aula on 1 September, which since 2017 has been officially celebrated as the Day of Hungarian Higher Education due to the establishment of the University of Pécs in 1367, the first University of Hungary. This day also marked the launch of centenary celebrations of the transfer of the Hungarian Royal Erzsébet University from Bratislava to Pécs.
In his opening speech, Rector Attila Miseta pointed out that the past decade has brought unprecedented developments to the University of Pécs, which continue as planned. He stressed that
"it is our duty to turn inevitable change to our advantage."
He emphasized the importance of cooperation between the university, the city and the wider region. He highlighted the importance of the university's third missionary activity, both in facilitating innovations as well as offering help in the social sphere. He mentioned that the university has achieved good admissions results. The opportunity for learning and development is provided for all students, but without hard work, it is hardly feasible.
He pointed out that the epidemic is still among us and that the only effective way to combat it is to get vaccinated. "Vaccinated people, there are many of us, but not enough. Those who have not been vaccinated are in serious danger. Therefore, precaution is not only an individual task, but also a shared responsibility of the whole community" – emphasized the rector, who concluded his speech with a quote from St. Francis of Assisi: "First do what is necessary, then do what is possible. And before you know it, you are doing the impossible." Then, in keeping with tradition, he announced:
"I declare the 2021/2022 academic year to be open."
