The needs of Roma communities could be professionally and effectively represented by trained experts in Roma studies and the initiatives of the different organizations, institutions might be also represented through them among the local Roma communities in order to gain efficient communication to solve current issues.

Collaborating with professionals from other fields - such as: sociologists, social politicians, teachers, lawyers, medical doctors, etc. - is essential for experts in Roma studies. In order to develop collaboration skills of our graduates, there are several courses during the program which are based on cooperative learning methods and group work. Field work and research methodology are in the core curriculum in order to prepare our graduates to work with real communities and other professionals after graduation.

The two officially accepted languages spoken by Hungarian Roma are thought as well. Our graduates have the great chance to learn both of these languages: Boyash and Romani, and after 1 semester they could decide which languages they want to continue with to succeed a B2 level language exam till the end of their graduation.

Not just the languages but their situation and sociolinguistic background are thought as well. The diverse content of this program (interdisciplinar: sociological, historical, cultural anthropological, pedagogical, political, legal approaches, Roma culture and folklore) provides a wide range of job opportunities, depending on what exact field of Romani Studies (education, social issues, minority rights, cultural anthropology, languages, etc.) is the most interesting for the given graduate.

MS Teams interview for applicants:

The interview will take approximately 10–20 minutes. During this time, our colleagues will ask the applicant questions about their motivation, interests, and academic goals.

The purpose of the interview is to gain a better understanding of the applicant’s language proficiency, personal skills, and scientific interests to assess their suitability for our academic community and their commitment to academic integrity.

The applicant has to submit the following documents by uploading them to the online application portal of the University of Pécs:

  • Certified and translated (if originals are not in English) copy of school transcripts and certificates showing satisfactory completion of senior high school.
  • We require an apostilled copy of degree certificates issued in the following countries: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Cameroon, Ghana, Pakistan. The admissions committee may also request additional legalization for documents issued in other countries
  • CV in English
  • Motivation letter (introduction plus field of interest, etc.) in 3000 to 3500 characters. It should focus on the candidate’s competencies, skills, educational background, and work experience. It should clearly explain their motivation for applying for the study program. Please note that the letter should be primarily about the candidate - not about the University of Pécs, preferably written by the candidate themselves and not generated by artificial intelligence tools.
  • Copy of valid passport or national ID
  • Medical certificate, (please fill in the document and attach the serologic test results)
    • vaccination card (showing that you are immunized against HEP B)
    • HEP A/B/C test*
    • HIV test*
    • Chest X-ray: Please attach the chest’s X-ray result (not the film!) in English/Hungarian! (not older than 3 months)
  • Transfer receipt of the application fee
  • Acceptable language exams
  • Admission interview (via MS Teams)
  • *Please note: tests have to be taken within a year!
  • ** Applicants are exempt from the language examination requirement if they meet the following criteria:
  • If the applicant obtained their secondary education in one of the following countries: the USA, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Malta, New Zealand, Australia, Canada (except French-language secondary schools), Singapore, or the Republic of South Africa
  • If the applicant has an International Baccalaureate (IB) qualification: Individual IB certificates may be considered for language test exemption purposes only
    • When applying, please include your grade 11 results, your first semester grade 12 results (Progress Report November) and official predicted grades from your school and ensure that the levels of all subjects are clearly indicated (HL, SL, A or B, etc.)
  • If the applicant has Cambridge, Pearson Edexcel or Oxford AQA International Examinations: with (I)GCSE + A-levels* student is exempted from English test. Cambridge, Pearson and/or Oxford AQA International A-Levels with grades A-C provide extra admission points.
    • When applying, also upload the following: your IGCSE results; or if you did not take IGCSEs, instead provide your (pre-A level) secondary school diploma or transcript
