Pinkbálnák on a humanitarian mission at the Budapest–Bamako Rally

This January, two women will set off from Pécs on an extraordinary overland journey that will take them through ten countries and two continents. It is a unique combination of adventure, solidarity, and support for local communities. Mária Adrienne Varga and Amaryl Árkovits, members of the Pinkbálnák (Pink Whale Swimming Club) and alumnae of the University of Pécs, will set off in their 24-year-old Toyota Land Cruiser, “Igor,” to take part in the 2026 Budapest-Bamako Rally.

It is important to note that the University of Pécs has participated in the humanitarian mission of the Budapest–Bamako Rally on several occasions: this is already the third PTE team supported by the university. The teams not only deliver donations to those in need along the way, but also visit schools, bring writing and school supplies and notebooks, and directly help local communities. Thus, the rally is not only an adventure and a driving challenge, but also tangible assistance, of which PTE can be particularly proud.

Their participation is remarkable not only because of the challenge of traveling more than 9,000 kilometres across varied terrain, but also because their goal is to provide communities along the route with basic necessities, with a particular focus on feminine hygiene products and educational humanitarian donations.

Pinkbálnák was founded a few years ago on a sunny August afternoon when a small group started swimming together, sharing their experiences and encouraging each other. Over time, their swimming evolved into charity challenges, raising funds through community campaigns and local partnerships to support people living in difficult circumstances.

Their decision to join one of the world's largest amateur rallies is the result of the same spirit of caring and collective action. While the rally itself is known for its adventurous spirit and cross-border camaraderie, Adrienne and Amaryl are turning it into a mobile aid effort. Along the way, the duo plans to distribute donated supplies in towns and villages where these products are difficult to obtain. This initiative is rooted in both humanitarian awareness and a belief in shared dignity.

The Pinkbálnák’s journey carries a subtle but powerful message about opportunity and self-actualisation. Their participation challenges traditional expectations about who undertakes such expeditions and highlights how compassion and courage can be unexpectedly intertwined. By entering a space far removed from the location of their club's beginnings, the pools, they emphasise that solidarity knows no age, gender, or boundaries.

On January 23, Adrienne and Amaryl will depart on a journey that will take them across deserts, mountains, and borderlands over the next 18 days. During their trip, they will meet communities and share the inspiring goodwill that accompanies them on their long journey.
