The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe has re-appointed Dr. Erzsébet Sándor-Szalay, professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Pécs, as a regular member of the Advisory Committee of the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities for another four-year term. The professor's first mandate ran from 2016 and 2020, and the decision on April 10 gives her a second vote of confidence for her outstanding international minority protection work.
The Framework Convention, established in 1995, is the first and so far the only legally binding multilateral international treaty at the universal level that aims to protect the rights of national minorities. Its implementation in the contracting states is monitored by the Advisory Committee, composed of 18 independent international experts, within the framework of a monitoring mechanism established for this purpose. It is currently in force in 39 member states.
