Honorary doctors

Prof. Maria Miguéns Pereira is honorary doctor of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Pécs since 9 November 2023.

"Maria Miguéns Pereira received her PhD in 1992, since then she has been conducting extensive research in several fields, achieving outstanding results, she is the author of 200 publications published in the most outstanding professional journals, and her Hirsch's index is 55. She has significant industrial connections and is co-founder of the Luzitin spin-off company. She did a lot to help the UP Faculty of Sciences Institute of Chemistry to move forward. The most important indicators of her cooperation with the institute are the mutual exchange of researchers, students and doctoral students, as well as the many joint scientific publications" – highlighted Dr. László Kollár, professor at the Institute of Chemistry of the UP Faculty of Sciences, describing the professional work and public activities of professor Maria Miguéns Pereira. He also proudly added that one of their former joint doctoral students was also present at the ceremony, which is the only reason why she travelled to Pécs.

"Thank you for the honour" – emphasized Maria Miguéns Pereira, recalling the beginning of the relationship with the University of Pécs: "in 1999, at the end of my PhD studies, I heard professor Kollár give a lecture in Tarragona, and since then it has become a fruitful relationship.

I think the relationship between the two institutions is a good example of how the field of science is not necessarily synonymous with academic competition."

The new honorary doctor of the University of Pécs also mentioned Katalin Karikó's success this year, having met the recent Nobel Prize winner in Paris last year – congratulating the entire Hungarian scientific community on the recognition. She also pointed out that just as Pécs is among the first universities with its foundation in 1367, the University of Coimbra is also among the first universities in the world, as it was founded in 1290 – this is also a link between the two institutions.

"There have always been challenges, but for my part I am optimistic and confident that the university spirit will prevail," she said. Finally, she thanked her family and close friends and concluded her speech with a quote from Pasteur: "Science knows no borders, because knowledge belongs to humanity itself, it shines like a torch on the world."

Seven internationally renowned honorary doctors of the University of Pécs have been inaugurated at the Ceremonial Senate Meeting on 4 November at the dr. Halasy-Nagy Lecture Hall. They are prominent, respected professors, who have been actively working in close cooperation with the University of Pécs. Through their professional achievements on their respective fields as well as in the joint research projects with the faculties of the University they have greatly benefited the University of Pécs as well as Hungarian science. They all have given their inaugural adresses at the repective promoting faculties, which they have summarized at the Ceremonial Senate Meeting.  

Dmitri Anatolyevich Funk is an ethnographer, cultural anthropologist, at the present time he is the director of the Institute of Anthropology and Ethnography of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He is a prominent, determinant person of the Russian ethnographical life who, due to his career as a scientist and as an institution manager, was a motor of the renewal of Russian researches and their involvement in the mainstream of the international researches. Dmitri Anatolyevich Funk professor has an outstanding role in the reformation of the Russian Siberian researches and of ethnography, the life of the cultural anthropological institutions in general. He has been in close relationship with the Hungarian scientific life for decades.  His connections with the Department of Ethnography – Cultural Anthropology of the University of Pécs are especially fruitful. In the spring of 2009, he participated in the department’s Marie Curie tender (“From Hungarian Ethnography to European Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology”), within the framework of which he held 2 courses: “Native folks of South-Siberia: ethnohistory, culture and dynamics of changes” and “Introduction to the Turkish epic tradition”. Dmitri Anatolyevich Funk plays the role of a bridge between the national, within it that of Pécs, and the Russian ethnography: he regularly appears in publications in Hungarian and he publishes Hungarian publications in Russian language.

In January 2018, Erik Slooten arrived at the head of IT Services Hungary Kft./ Deutsche Telekom IT Solutions with nearly 20 years of senior management experience acquired in an international environment. He had worked at several global, market-leader mobile and ICT companies in regional positions, including in Slovakia with Slovak Telekom, the Czech Republic with GTS and T-Mobile, and Bulgaria with Vivacom. From August 2019, alongside his leadership of ITSH, he also undertook the global management of Public Cloud Service division at T-Systems International. His career is hallmarked by the introduction and transformation of major IT systems. In the course of his work he has achieved significant results, not only in the area of IT, but B2B sales, marketing and business development, too. As a manager committed to innovation, he is associated with several solutions introduced at international level. Beside technological innovations, he considers creating the possibility for the development of children for whom this opportunity is not available due to their social situation especially important. Accordingly, he initiated an educational programme where now more than 70 disadvantaged children are learning programming in Szendrőlád and Pécs.

Jacques Demotes-Mainard was born in 1956 in France. He obtained medical qualification, then he passed a professional examination as a neurologist. He is the professor of cell biology and neurobiology. He has spent a longer period in the United Stated with research. From 2001 to 2007 he was the leader of the clinical research organization of the INSERM, then in 2014 he was elected to be the general director of the ECRIN. He has held this position since then, thus he is the head of the most important clinical research infrastructure of the European Union. Within the work organization of the ECRIN, Dr. Jacques Demotes-Mainard especially supported the Hungarian member organization of the ECRIN (HECRIN Consortium) in becoming a full member of the ECRIN and the Hungarian centre of the HECRIN Consortium in being taken to the University of Pécs. He supported the implementation of the Erasmus+ program managed by the HECRIN Consortium and the University of Pécs with the participation of French, Irish, Portuguese and Czech universities. He provided international support for the EFOP programme compiled by the University of Pécs, University of Debrecen and University of Szeged, he undertook to make the expansive international communication channels of the ECRIN available to the HECRIN Consortium and the University of Pécs if the COST (Cooperation in Science and Technology) tender submitted by the University of Pécs wins support in 2020. He was for the organization of the “International Clinical Trial’s Day”, the most important forum of the clinical researches, at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences by the HECRIN Consortium and the University of Pécs in 2018. He takes part in the work of the International Consulting Body of the Szentágothai János Research Centre thus he regularly visits to Pécs.

The name of Dr. Michael Kilchling, the senior researcher of the Max-Planck-Institut seated in Freiburg “agglutinated” with the scientific co-operations that have been in existence between the Faculty of Law of the University of Pécs and the Institution since the beginning of the 2000s. Michael Kilchling has regularly given lectures for 14 years at the international scientific symposiums named “Kriminologischer Sommerkurs” started at the initiation of László Korinek academician and organized at the Faculty of Law of the University of Pécs with criminological and criminal law topics and he rendered serious professional assistance for the strengthening of the international scientific reputation of the criminalists teaching at the Faculty of Law. He supported the research of several professors of the Faculty of Law in the biggest criminal research workshop in the world, at the Max-Planck-Institut für ausländisches und internationales Strafrecht and the winning of the Max-Planck-Stipendium. His research area covers almost every issue of criminology and criminal law, considered relevant and current by the international scientific community, such as fighting against money laundering and terrorism, typology of organized crime, handling the especially dangerous criminals etc. He is one of the most well-known international authorities of the science of criminology and victimology.

Monika Schlachter is a German professor of law, she has been a member of the European Council’s body, the “European Committee of Social Rights” since 2007, currently she is its vice president. She is the director of the “Institut für Arbeitsrecht und Arbeitsbeziehungen in der Europäischen Union” (IAAEU), which is the most important labour law scientific collection in Europe for the time being. In the 1992/1993 academic year she worked at the Department of Labour Law of the University of Freiburg. From 1993 to 2006 she was a professor of the reorganized University of Jena, the Faculty of Law, Department of Civil Law, Labour Law, International Private Law and Comparative Jurisprudence. In 2006, she was invited to the Department of Labour Law and Civil Law of the University of Regensburg, where she worked until 2008. While she acted as a professor of law, she held many positions at the certain faculties of law (dean, deputy dean, senator, a member of the research committee, dean for research). At the University of Jena, she was the leader of the LL.M. programme of the University of Sydney. She is one of the elaborators and participants of the European LL.M. programme of the University of Sevilla. Prof. Monika Schlachter was appointed to the Department of International and European Labour Law and Civil Law of the University of Trier in 2008. In the last decade, she provided opportunity for continuous and regular research to the current and former employees of the Department of Labour Law and Social Insurance of the University of Pécs, she established fruitful scientific co-operation between the Faculty’s Department of Labour Law and Social Insurance and the employees of the Research Group of Comparative and European Employment Policy and Labour Law of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences – University of Pécs.

Dr. Vicki L. Golich, who is Provost and Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs at the Metropolitan State University of Denver, has been a key player in strategic planning of joint projects of the MSU Denver and the University of Pécs. As an outstanding expert in international relations, she has contributed significantly to the development of close collaboration and continues to be actively involved in maintaining this relationship. The result of her ongoing efforts is a professional cooperation between the two universities, covering both teaching and research activities. Dr. Vicki L. Golich became Executive Vice President at MSU Denver in 2009 and is a professor of the Department of Political Science. Before that, she had climbed the academic ladder at California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) and became a professor in 1998. She was interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at CSUSM, than was elected dean from 2004 through 2009. Her main field of studies has been international and diplomatic relations. During her undergraduate studies, she spent 18 months at Universität des Saarbrücken in West Germany, studying Political Science and International Relations. She earned her Master’s Degree at California State University, Fullerton in International Relations Theory and Comparative Politics. In 1984, she received her Ph.D. at University of Southern California with emphases in International Political Economy, International Relations Theory, and Comparative Politics. Dr. Golich has an extraordinary passion for education and is a renowned expert in the field, conducting many teaching workshops around the world, combining interactive teaching models with her own research. She writes about her research field as sensible as about education. It is evident from her curriculum vitae that, besides teaching and research, she is also an experienced leader, who managed many important projects successfully. As a result of her proactive participation, financial support became available for joint projects of the MSU Denver and the UP, thus enabling our lecturers to gain access to more research and teaching opportunities.

Zoran Pavlović is a professor of criminal law at the University of Economics and Law of Novi Sad, Faculty of Law, he is the provincial ombudsman of the Vojvodina Autonomous Province. He is an internationally recognized professor, authority of criminal law. In 2019, he received recognition as a Honoris Causa professor at the Chinese Southeast University Law School. He is regularly invited to give lectures in China and in many countries of Europe. He regularly delivers lectures at the Faculty of Political Science and Law of the University of Pécs, he participates in international conferences. In addition to this, in the spring of 2020, he made a proposal to the Faculty’s dean for the elaboration of a mutual international training programme. Together with the leader of the Department of Criminal Law of the University of Pécs, Faculty of Law, he is the editor in chief of the Journal of Eastern European Criminal Law, the C category international professional journal of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, which is jointly published by the University of Pécs, Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Law of the University of Timisoara twice a year, in Bucharest. He works as the provincial ombudsman of Vojvodina as well, inter alia, the enforcement of the rights of the Hungarian minority of Vojvodina belongs to him.

Prof. dr. Antonino Germano Doctor et Professor Honoris Causa of Medical School since 7 November 2019.

Professor Dr. Antonino Germano, professor and chair of the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Messina had a research fellowship under the supervision of Dr. John Povlishock PhD, the Director of Neurosurgery Research Institute and Academy of Neuroanatomy and Neurobiology in Richmond, Virginia, where he sudied the pathobiology of traumatic brain injury. Professor Germano has a pioneer role in research and clinical application of high precision transcortical magnetic stimulation (Nexstim). Our professional interest joined again about four years ago, when we aimed to set up a high-precision transcortical magnetic stimulation system for the Department of Neurosurgery. 
Due to his invaluable contribution and support we have established a very close collaboration with the University of Messina. Under this collaboration we established the transcortical magnetic stimulation measurements at the Department of Neurosurgery, University of Pecs, both for research and clinical/diagnostic use. 
This project also has been materialized in a H2020 grant under revision as well as a joint research program on transcortical neurostimulation.
In the framework of our collaboration a total of six colleagues from the Department of Neurosurgery have attended four-week courses in Messina on functional MRI, neuropsychology. We have submitted two scientific abstracts in cooperation with Department of Neurosurgery in Messina for the annual Conference of the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies based on the results of our joint research project regarding the functional plasticity to expand the clinical use of Nexstim. After four years of cooperation with Professor Germano in organizing the The International Pannonian Symposium, one of the world’s most renowned conference on neurotrauma, this year he host the conference in Sicily. Due to our joint efforts with Professor Germano, the Neurotrauma and Critical Care Committee of the Association of European Neurosurgical Societies recognizes this event as the official forum and event of the EANS Neurotrauma and Critical Care Symposium. 
Professor Germano has been to Hungary on numerous occasions and has given a number of lectures in Pécs. The award of the Honoris Causa Professorship will further guarantee that the joint efforts and the established scientific cooperation will results in shared international PhD and residency programs with the University of Messina.
 

Dr. Hugh Sherman honorary doctor of the Faculty of Business and Economics of the University of Pécs since 7 November 2019.

Faculty of Business and Economics, University of Pécs (UPFBE) had the honour to award Doctor Honoris Causa title to Professor Hugh Sherman officially expressing its gratitude for his dedication and commitment towards continuously developing and strengthening the institutional cooperation between OU and UPFBE over the past two decades.
In 1996 Professor Sherman as Associate Dean of Ohio University, College of Business (OU) provided significant assistance in launching the Simonyi Summer Program that has been jointly run by OU and UPFBE ever since. Creating the joint Summer Program certainly brought new perspectives to the then  already 7 year old institutional cooperation between the respected institutions.
Thanks to Professor Sherman’s initiative, several UPFBE students could participate on OU’s MBA program as exchange students in the past years. He furthermore, played an active role in refocusing and restructuring the institutional cooperation between OU and UPFBE. His active contribution and supervision was highly appreciated among others in the process of creating UPFBE’s Simonyi Business and Economic Development Center in 2013; just as in case of the official celebration of the 25th anniversary of the institutional cooperation and the inauguration of the Ohio classroom in Pécs in 2014, and in the organisation of the joint scientific conferences in 2018 in Pécs and in 2019 in Athens, Ohio. These programs and activities ensured that the institutional cooperation became an active on personal-professional relationship based real cooperation involving more than 30 faculty members from both institutions.
UPFBE is proud to have Professor Sherman among its Doctor Honoris Causa acknowledging Professor Sherman’s continuous efforts, significant contribution and support in shaping the institutional partnership.

Prof. Dr. Valéria Csépe  Doctor et Professor Honoris Causa of Faculty of Humanities since 7 November 2019.

Prof. Dušan Nikolić is honorary doctor of the University of Pécs since 8 November 2018.

Born in Pančevo in 1962. He graduated from the Novi Sad Faculty of Law in 1986. In 1990 he received his LL.M. degree from the same faculty of law with thesis “Legislative Regulations and Protection of Cyber Functions”. In 1994 at the Belgrade Faculty of Law he defended his doctoral dissertation titled “Sanctions in Civil Law” which was graded with highest distinctions. His teaching career started in 1986 when he was elected for the assistant at the Department of Civil Law. In 1995 he was promoted to the assistant professor, in 2000 to the associate professor and in 2005 to the full professor. As an assistant he taught practical exercises in Civil Law (general part and property), Civil Law and Law of Inheritance, and Law of Obligations both to law students and students of the Group for Internal Affairs at the Novi Sad Faculty of Law. He also taught Law for Economists at the Faculty of Economics (Departments in Novi Sad and Subotica), and a course in Economic and Legal Aspects of Environmental Protection at the Institute for Biology at the Novi Sad Faculty for Natural Sciences and Mathematics.

Professor Nikolić teaches Civil law, Property law, and from time to time, Obligation law.

As a visiting professor and researches professor Dušan Nikolić visited The Law Faculty of the University of Geneva (Switzerland) in 2002 and 2004, Max Planck Institute for Comparative Law and International Private Law in Hamburg (Germany) in 2004, and the University of Maribor Faculty of Law (Slovenia) in 2005. He also made shorter study visits to around twenty foreign universities on the basis of inter-university cooperation programmes.

Professor Dušan Nikolić was a co-ordinator of social sciences research projects of the Young Researches of Vojvodina. He served as a judge at the Court of Honor of the regional Chamber of Commerce in Novi Sad as well as of the Chamber of Commerce of Serbia. He was a member of the Presidium of Yugoslav Association for Medical Law; he was a member of the Accreditation Committee for institutions of higher education at the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Serbia; member of the Management Board of the Student Center in Novi Sad. He also was a member of several Faculty’s bodies and committees. He mentored seminar papers and theses in the course of LL.M. studies. He participated in preparation of legislative drafts of several federal and state laws. He was the Dean of the Novi Sad Faculty of Law (2002-2004).

He is a member of the Novi Sad University Council, a member of the Council of Experts for Multidisciplinary Studies at the University of Novi Sad, a member of the Management Board of the Central and Eastern European University Network with the headquarters in Venice (Italy), a member of the Board of editors of Transition Studies Review, a member of the Center for monitoring the implementation of the European Constitution with the headquarters in Rome. Professor Nikolić is the President of the Association of Teaching Staff for a European University. He is also the Editor-in-Chief of an international journal (European Lawyer Journal), a member of the working group for preparation of the draft of the Law on Property and a member of the Social Sciences Board of Matica Srpska. He is a director of Matica Srpska project titled: Private law in Vojvodina between the two world wars.

Areas of academic interest: general principles of civil law, history of civil law, philosophy of civil law, torts, intellectual property law, environmental law, information law, harmonization of private law, law of urban planning and civil engineering.

Professor Nikolić published several books and over 100 academic articles and other scholarly writings.

Dr. Stefan Pollak is honorary doctor of the University of Pécs since 8 November 2018.

Jun Kaneko is honorary doctor of the University of Pécs since 25 May 2018.

Dr. Sándor Csányi  is honorary doctor of the University of Pécs since 4 May 2018.

Biography:

He graduated from the College of Finance and Accountancy in 1974 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and in 1980 from the Karl Marx University of Economic Sciences with a degree in economics. He is an economist with a specialisation in finance, and a certified auditor. 

After graduation he worked at the Revenue Directorate and then at the Secretariat of the Ministry of Finance, after which, between 1983 and 1986, he was a departmental head at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry. From 1986 to 1989 he worked as a head of department at Magyar Hitel Bank. He was deputy CEO of K&H Bank from 1989 to 1992.

He has been Chairman & CEO of OTP Bank Plc. since 1992.

He is a member of the European Advisory Board of MasterCard, one of the world’s leading payment card companies, and is Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors of MOL Plc., Co-Chairman of the National Association of Entrepreneurs and Employers (VOSZ), and Co-Chairman of the Chinese-Hungarian Business Council.

He has been Chairman of the Hungarian Football Association (MLSZ) since July 2010, and a member of the UEFA Executive Committee since March 2015. Since April 2017 he has been a member of the FIFA Council. Since 2018 he has been the vice-president of the FIFA.

Dr. Károly Attila Soós received his MSc economist degree in 1967 at the Karl Marx University of Economic Sciences of Budapest in 1967.

He has worked as a junior research fellow, then research fellow and senior research fellow with the Institute of Economics of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences since 1967. During this time, without stopping contacts with the Institute, he also taught as professor at universities in France and the US, he was member of the Hungarian Parliament and of the Government in the 1990s. Then, in 1998-2000, he spent three years in London as member of the Board of Directors of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. He is an internationally recognised researcher of the economic systems and macroeconomic problems of Central and Eastern European countries.

Dr. Soós’ participation in the work of the Faculty of Business and Economics of the University of Pécs started at the end of the 1970s. He was appointed honorary assistent professor of the University of Pécs in 1984, and habilitated at the Faculty in 2009. From 2001 on, he has been lecturer of applied macroeconomics  at the Faculty’s PhD Program of Business Administration.

Inaugural lecture

A common currency for Europe had been an old idea but when, in the early 1990s, Euroland received its final blueprint, it was largely determined by the fear of bankruptcies of member countries’ governments. According to Maastricht rules, countries entering Euroland had to have a public debt below 60% of their GDP. However, countries with debt burdens bigger than that – countries with „original sins” – also had to be admitted. Thus, for the sake of security, a condition limiting the annual public sector deficit to 3 % of the GDP was also set. Then, fiscal rules were also extended and „perfected” for countries already members of Euroland. But the violators have never been punished. And still, the rules seriously impair member countries’fiscal autonomy.

Economists – Charles Wyplosz some other colleagues – have recently designed a concept according to which the seigniorage revenue of the ECB could become the source of servicing an important fraction of outstanding public debts. This would also imply a politically acceptable way to reduce high debts to a reasonable level, i. e., to abolish the „original sin” of indebted countries. After it, any member government would only be threatened by bankruptcy if it behaved in an extremely irresponsible way. My question is whether then the system of fiscal rules should still be maintained.

Donald Tusk is honorary doctor of the University of Pécs since 8 December 2017.

Donald Tusk was born in 1957 in Gdańsk, Poland. In 1976 he started studying history at the University of Gdańsk, where he got involved in illegal activities against the Communist regime.

In the 1980s he was an activist in the underground Solidarity movement. In 1980 he founded the Independent Students' Association (NZS), part of Solidarity. In 1983 he launched the Political Review, a monthly that promoted economic liberalism and democracy. An informal think-tank supporting Lech Wałęsa was centred around the periodical.

After the fall of communism the think-tank members known as the Gdańsk Liberals formed a government following the first free presidential elections in Poland. They also founded the Liberal Democratic Congress, with Tusk as its leader.

In the 1990s Tusk served as an MP and deputy Speaker of the Senate. He also published books on the history of Gdańsk.

In 2001 he was one of the initiators of the centrist Civic Platform party, which he led from 2003. Tusk was Prime Minister from 2007-2014, making him the longest-serving premier in democratic Poland, and the first to be reelected.

Tusk was elected President of the European Council in 2014, reelected for a second term in 2017.

Catherine Vértesi is honorary doctor of the University of Pécs since 16 November 2017.

Catherine Vertesi recently retired as Vice President of Capilano University in Vancouver Canada. She has been a visionary leader, mentor and innovator in the field of International Education for over 35 years and has been a driving force behind the professionalization of International Education across Canada and beyond.

The contributions she has made to her institutions, specifically the University of British Columbia and Capilano University, where she was recognized with awards for teaching excellence, program innovation and outstanding student service, have been significant and lasting.  At a time when few faculty on campus were engaged in international activities, Catherine initially focussed on the business school but subsequently led several successful campus-wide internationalization projects focussed on the student experience and curriculum change. But it is her outreach, sharing and community building that really sets Catherine apart. For over 25 years at the annual international education conferences in Canada, the USA and Europe she has led countless seminars on best practices.

In the last 10 years she pioneered and led 70 faculty members from 17 institutions across Canada on intensive internationalization trips in the EU and in 2011 Catherine became the only non-American to lead the 9,000 attendee NAFSA conference, the largest international education conference in the world. Catherine has been a trailblazer, and one who has always been so generous with both her time and experience, that both provincial and federal government organizations have given her their distinguished leadership and lifetime achievement awards. A constant and active mentor to so many she is most deserving of this recognition. 

Ismet Güral is honorary doctor of the University of Pécs since 16 November 2017.

Ismet Güral, Executive Chairman of Gural Porselen 

Born on May 1st, 1950 in Kutahya, Mr Gural completed his primary school education in Kutahya and then finished high school at a college. He was graduated from Istanbul University, Faculty of Economics and Commercial Sciences in 1972. Afterwards, he completed his graduate program at the same faculty in 1973. Then, he continued his studies in England from 1973 to 1974.

Mr. Gural is leading in the industries of porcelain, sanitaryware, energy and tourism. Gural products are exported to more than 50 counties, and guests from all around the world are welcome in holiday resorts.  Nearly 3.500 associates constitute the Gural family today.

Ismet Gural is married and he has three children. He is the executive chairman of Gural Porselen, and he has been the Honorary Consul of Hungary to Kutahya since 1993.

He worked as the President of Turkish-Hungarian Business Council in Foreign Economic Relations Board of Turkey. During his term of office; not only economic relations, but also cultural relations have always been of high importance. He took part in “sister cities Pecs and Kutahya” project starting from the 1988. Mr. Gural also has an important role in establishing “twin university” relations between University of Pecs and Dumlupinar University at Kutahya. Establishing partnership between the universities of both cities was first arisen in 1994 during the visit of Turkish Prime Minister, Mr. Suleyman Demirel to Pecs. After that visit, Ismet Gural who was a member of Turkish delegation in the visit, worked a lot in both universities for establishing this partnership.

 He is contributing to the efforts to improve the cultural relations between Hungary and Turkey by supporting the events and projects of Dumlupınar University at Kutahya and University of Pécs.

Mr. Gural is now the President of Turkish-Slovak Business Council in Foreign Economic Relations Board of Turkey, Board Member of Turkish Tourism Investors Association, and member of Turkish American Business Association.

Ismet Gural is awarded with Turkish Great National Assembly’s Honors Award which is given very selectively. He was also awarded twice with the High Prize of Republic of Hungary by President Arpad Gonz in 1996 and by President Pal Schmitt in 2011.

Maurizio Ferraris is honorary doctor of the University of Pécs since 16 November 2017.

Maurizio Ferraris is full Professor of Philosophy at the University of Turin, where he is the vice-Rector for Humanities Research and the President of the LabOnt– Laboratory for Ontology. Directeur de recherche at the Collège d’études mondiales (Paris) and advisory member of the Center for Advanced Studies of South East Europe (Rijeka) and of the Internationales Zentrum Für Philosophie NRW, he is doctor honoris causa in Humanities at the University of Flores (Buenos Aires). He has been Fellow of Käte-Hamburger Kolleg “Recht als Kultur” (Bonn) and Fellow of the Italian Academy for Advanced Studies in America (Columbia University, New York) and of the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung. He has also been Directeur d’études of the Collège International de Philosophie and Visiting Professor at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (Paris) as well as other European and American Universities. He is columnist for ‘La Repubblica’, the Director of ‘Rivista di Estetica’, of ‘Critique’, of ‘Círculo Hermenéutico editorial’ and of the ‘Revue francophone d’esthétique’. He wrote more than fifty books that have been translated into several languages. He has a continuous collaboration with the University of Pécs, also for involving some professors of this University in his international project of research about Documentality, Media and Web Media.

Norbert Kersken is honorary doctor of the University of Pécs since 16 November 2017.

Studying history (focused on medieval history and history of Eastern Europe), Slavic philology and philosophy at the University of Münster I was staff of „Glossary on the early medieval history in Eastern Europe (initiated by Manfred Hellmann, Münster and Herbert Ludat, Gießen). Here I got deeply in touch with the broad spectre of Latin historiography of the Middle Ages  especially with problems of tradion and dependence of texts. In this connection prepared for print 99 Lemmata (I should highlight the voluminous lemma „Danubius“). The dissertation, supervised by Peter Johanek, tried to collect, analize and compare those historiographic texts presenting the history of a country or people from the very beginnings to the present. A two years employment at the town archiv of Coesfeld brought out amongst others a comprehensive annotated bibliography on the history of Coesfeld. During the years 1993/95 I worked at the Berlin-based Institute on the history and culture of East Central Europe (forerunner of the GWZO in Leipzig) on a project on Early modern estates in East-Central Europe (directed by Winfried Eberhard). Since 1996 I am member of research staff of the Marburg Herder Institute for Historical Research on East Central Europe. For more than ten years I headed a work group providing a online-database on the history of East Central Europe in ccoperation with associated institutes; above that I do university teaching continously first in Hamburg and since 1998 in Gießen. Besides this it was possible on the one hand to go on working on comparative studies on the history of historiography and on the other hand to publish studies on special topics on the history of the single regions and countries concerning the medieval and early modern history of East Central Europe (in detail on Pomorania, Livonia, Upper Lusatia, Silesia, Bohemia, Polan and Hungary). A three years research stay at the German Historical Institute in Warsaw was dedicated to issues of the foreign relations of Piast Poland.

Above that, in Berlin, Warsaw and Marburg, I organized conferences to kick off new research and to stimulate exchange between colleagues in the countries of East Central Europe. These conferences featured different topics as the politics of the Estates, medieval historiography, the political and cultural networks of Piast Poland, late medieval foreign politics, medieval interregna, influences of the Reformation in East Central Europe or the crusading movement in late medieval Europe.

Predrag Sikirić is honorary doctor of the University of Pécs since 16 November 2017.

Predrag Sikiric MD,PhD is professor at the Department of Pharmacology, Medical  University of Zagreb, Croatia.

He and his team discovered an peptide in the human gastric juce, which prevents the development of gastric  mucosal damage (without any inhibitory effect on gastric acid secretion). This molecule was isolated and the sequence of amino acids was identifield. This molecule acts in very small doses, and it has no toxic behaviour. Later, he and his coworkers proved the mucosal protecting effects on the other parts of gastrointestinal tract in animal experiments and human studies. Now this molecule exists in different human clinical pharmacological phase examinations in patients with ulcerative colitis and sclerosis multiplex. This active peptide compound was named as “Body Protection Compound, BPC”.

Our scientific collaboration started from 1989, and it’s existing up to now. We together organized international symposia of International Conferences on Ulcer Researh and of International Union of Pharmacology, Gastrointestinal Section (IUPHAR GI SECTION) in Hungary (Budapest, Pécs) and Croatia (Zagreb, Dubrovnik, Split). We together established the international journal (Pergamon Press Publishers) “Experimental and Clinical Gastroenteroloy” (1990).

We have principle roles in the establishing of possibilities for Hungary and Croatia to participate in the World scientific collaboration in our fields , namely ulcer research.

Professor Sikiric and his studies internationally well know and accepted.

Doctor et Professor Honoris Causa title was conferred on Stephen M. Jordan on the Ceremonial Senate Meeting of the University of Pécs since 16 November 2017.

Stephen M. Jordan, President, Metropolitan State University, Denver (MSU Denver)

Stephen M. Jordan has been president of Metropolitan State University of Denver since July 2005.

Since taking the helm, Jordan has led MSU Denver on a rapid trajectory toward becoming one of the preeminent public urban universities in the nation. Under his leadership, MSU Denver has achieved university status. In addition, the University has been recognized locally and nationally for the value of its degrees as evidenced by the return on investment its graduates attain.

In an environment of deep budget cuts, Jordan has led nationally recognized initiatives to retool and reposition the University for the future.

The University is currently pursuing additional partnerships to complete its community Athletic Complex and construct an interdisciplinary aviation/advanced manufacturing academic building that will educate Colorado’s advanced industry workers of tomorrow.

During his seven years as president of Eastern Washington University - before coming to MSU Denver - he grew the University from 6,900 students to over 10,000 students and repositioned the university from a commuter institution to a residential university. 

Jordan was one of sixteen presidents  in the United States recognized in the book The Entrepreneurial President for his entrepreneurial approach to innovation and change. 

Jordan grew up in Colorado. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Northern Colorado and a master’s degree and a doctorate in public administration from the University of Colorado Denver.

He and his wife Ruthie have two sons, a daughter and six grandchildren

Yuan Juxiang is honorary doctor of the University of Pécs since 8 September 2017.

Yuan Juxiang, PhD. Professor and President of North China University of Science and Technology. He is also Chairman of Coal System Society, China Preventive Medical Association；Chairman of occupational epidemiology group, China Occupational Health and Medicine Society; Vice Chairman of Hebei Provincial Epidemiology and Health Statistics Association; Committee member of China Preventive Medical Association and China Occupational Health and Medicine Society, and China Preventive Medical Association; Editor in Chief of the Journal of Clinical Medicine of China.

Professor Yuan has published 95 papers and compiled 19 monographs. He has obtained 15 Science and Technology Progress Awards.

He is in charge of 25 scientific research projects. His research area includes pneumoconiosis epidemiology such as risk factors, epidemic character and preventive strategies, methods and pathogenesis; expound epidemic characteristics of pneumoconiosis and relationship of pneumoconiosis and geological condition; development of occupational tumor genesis and epidemiology; relationship of Helicobacter pylori and gastric cancer in coal miners and research on tuberculosis of pneumoconiosis.

Neuroscientist György Buzsáki – who  earned his medical degree at the University of Pécs, and was rewarded with The Brain Prize for his activities in 2011 – was inaugurated as the honorary doctor of the University of Pécs on the occasion of the Celebration of the Day of Hungarian Higher Education on the 1st of September 2017.

Biosketch 

György Buzsáki is a systems neuroscientist known for his two-stage model of memory consolidation, discovery of internally generated cell assemblies that support cognition, neural syntax and brain rhythms and his innovative techniques in neuroscience. Buzsaki was born in Hungary, grew up in Pécs, where received his M.D. in 1974 from the University of Pécs, then earned his Ph.D. in Neuroscience in 1984 from the Academy of Sciences in Budapest. He is among the top 1% most-cited neuroscientists, member of the National Academy of Sciences USA, Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Academiae Europaeae and an external member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He sits on the editorial boards of several leading neuroscience journals, including Science and Neuron, received honoris causa from Université Aix-Marseille, France, University of Kaposvar, Hungary and University of Pecs, Hungary. He is a co-recipient of the 2011 Brain Prize (with Peter Somogyi and Tamas Freund). Author of a popular neuroscience book: G. Buzsáki, Rhythms of the Brain, Oxford University Press, 2006.

Research Interest 

Buzsáki’s primary interests is “neural syntax”, i.e., how segmentation of neural information is organized by the numerous brain rhythms to support cognitive functions.. He identified the cellular-synaptic basis of hippocampal theta, gamma oscillations and sharp waves with associated fast oscillations, their relationship to each other and to behavior and sleep. He was the first to demonstrate the role of GABAergic interneurons in network oscillations. Buzsaki’s recognition of the importance hierarchical organization of brain rhythms of different frequencies and their cross-frequency coupling has opened up opportunities for the dissection of cognitive mechanisms in health and disease.

His most influential work, the two-stage model of memory trace consolidation, demonstrates how the neocortex-mediated information during learning transiently modifies hippocampal networks, followed by reactivation and consolidation of these memory traces during sharp wave-ripple patterns of sleep.  Buzsaki’s demonstration that in the absence of changing environmental signals, cortical circuits continuously generate self-organized cell assembly sequences is a breakthrough for the neuronal assembly basis of cognitive functions. His recent experiments demonstrated how skewed distribution of firing rates supports robustness, sensitivity, plasticity and stability in neuronal networks.

To achieve these goals he has pioneered numerous technical innovations, including large-scale recording methods using silicon chips and the NeuroGrid, an organic, comformable electrode system used in both animal and patients.

Born in 1946, Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Ekkehard Nuissl von Rein studied sociology and pedagogy. He was manager of the Heidelberg Institute for educational research and director of the Adult Education Institute (Volkshochschule) in Hamburg. Since 1991 he has been serving as director of the German Institute for Adult Education (DIE) in Bonn. He represented Germany at the OECD, the UNESCO, at the European Conference on lifelong learning and the European Commission in Brussels. In 1998, he was elected president of the European Research and Development Institutes of Adult Education (ERDI); since 2003 he is serving as past-president. From 1998 to 2004 he represented the Leibniz-Association as vice-president. Since 2003 he has been teaching at the University of Duisburg-Essen. In 2006 he was elected member of the International Adult and Continuing Education Hall of Fame. Several of his more than 600 publications are available in English and other European languages.

It is not at all surprising that most influential international organisations, like the UNESCO, OECD and the EU, signal nowadays underline the importance of quality education to be developed. Not only rising the number of learners, but also the performance of learners may reflect the competitiveness of a country or a region. I presume the performance of adult learners strongly depend on available high quality adult learning professionals, we today would call adult educators.

Competencies of adult educators depend, up to a certain extent, of their higher education and it is more than important today to develop, innovate and research how adult educators are educated and trained within higher education institutions. One element of our scrutiny is to analyse and compare curricula of BA and MA in Adult Education in order to be able to point out where and what to change, improve or modify referring to content, structure, methodologies, assessment, etc.

In the last ten years, I have dealt with the comparative studies of curricula of MA programmes in Adult Education across Europe so as to develop a European Masters in Adult Education. Three years ago, the University joined a distinguished project called European Studies and Research in Adult Learning and Education (ESRALE) together with nine other universities and two professional bodies (DIE and VPL) to jointly develop a programme to educate and train “Competent Adult Educators”. In my inauguration speech, I am going to describe some findings of ESRALE, the project I have led, around competences and their acknowledgement, both in professional and in academic contexts.

Professor Markus W. Büchler is honorary doctor of the University of Pécs since 9 November 2016.

Biography:

University of Heidelberg, Germany

Professor Markus W. Büchler is the executive director and professor of surgery at the department of surgery at Heidelberg University. After studying medicine in Heidelberg and Berlin he started his surgical training at the University of Ulm where he became deputy clinical director in 1987. In 1993 he became professor of surgery and clinical director at the University of Bern, Switzerland. In 2001 he returned to Germany to start leading the surgical department in Heidelberg. Today he is also head of the surgical departments at the Salem hospital in Heidelberg and at the general hospitals of Sinsheim, Eberbach, and Heppenheim. He is an internationally respected expert in the field of surgery, especially in the field of pancreatic surgery. More than 2300 authored scientific manuscripts published by him focused on the molecular basis of GI cancer and pancreatic diseases as well as clinical surgical problems. Among others he has been president of the German Surgical Society, the European Pancreas Club, and the International Hepato-Pancreato-Bilary Association. He is a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and he is an honorary member of the American Surgical Association and the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of England and Scotland among other societies. He has received multiple scientific awards and is a member of the editorial boards of many well-known scientific journals.

Dear colleagues at the University of Pécs,

It is a great privilege and honor for me to receive this Honorary Doctorate from one of the eldest universities in Europe and from biggest university in Hungary.

At the beginning of this year I was told that I would be recipient of this degree. In this moment it became clear to me how intense my connection with the University of Pécs has become over the years. Already during my surgical training in Ulm in the 1980s I got to know my dear friend and your colleague Dezső Kelemen. This friendship resulted in my ongoing personal and professional exchange with him and with the University of Pécs. Since 2001 I have the great pleasure to accompany and to direct this exchange as Professor of surgery and chairman at the University Hospital of Heidelberg, one of the biggest and most renowned in Germany.

Though many things around us have changed over the years we succeded to establish a persistent connection that based on clinical and scientifical collaboration, regular personal exchange, and common events. Even in times of modern communication you still have to face challenges concerning language and bureaucracy that could interfere into exchange. It has therefore always been impressive to me how easy, close and fruitful exchange between Pécs and Heidelberg Universities has been. Together we contributed to progress in research, clinical medicine and especially in surgery.

Ronald L. Hayes, Ph.D. is co-founder and Chief Science Officer of Banyan Biomarkers, Inc. He is also Director of Banyan Laboratories. Previously he was Director of the University of Florida’s Center for Traumatic Brain Injury Studies which focused on laboratory studies of basic mechanisms of traumatic brain injury and development of novel therapies to treat deficits following brain injury including disturbances in memory and attention. Dr. Hayes has more than 35 years of experience studying brain injury. He is past President of The National Neurotrauma Society, on the Scientific Advisory Boards of International Brain Injury Association and the International Neurotrauma Society. Dr. Hayes has published more than 300 peer reviewed papers and more than 50 book chapters. Dr. Hayes has also co-edited three books on traumatic brain injury. He has been funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for more than 30 years and is currently funded by both the NIH and the Department of Defense.

Magnificent Rector, Academic Authorities, Ladies and Gentlemen,

first let me thank the University of Pécs for delivering me this “Honoris Causa Doctorate’. I feel extremely honoured in receiving this award that comes to me as one of the most significant achievements of my research activity.

At the same time this celebration looks to me the best way to illustrate the long standing joint collaboration in the field of catalysis between the Universities of Pecs and Sassari. This collaboration, originally established over twenty years ago when Prof. Kollár was still working at the University of Veszprém, moved jointly with him when he took up the chair of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Pécs in 1997.

In the course of the years the joint projects arising from this collaboration allowed a number of young coworkers to move to Sassari from Pécs and vice-versa for research stages that have contributed to improve their scientific expertise and have positively impacted on their doctoral and post-doctoral record.

Thanks to various funds we had the possibility of several visits. The scientific collaboration still exists and active with one of my former colleagues. I look back with much pleasure to the scientific discussions I had with the colleagues at the University. For this reason, I appreciate very much the opportunity given by this ceremony that brings me once more to Pecs to renovate the good feelings of some time ago.

Finally, let me add one personal notation. Today in the audience there is a large delegation of my family including my wife, my children and some grandchildren. I guess that you may agree with me that it is a very rare case in the life to have children/grandchildren attending the graduation ceremony of their father/grandfather. I am the lucky man that has the possibility to enjoy this “back to the future” experience. This makes me extremely proud and happy. "As the dean of the Faculty of Music and Visual Arts, and particularly as a musician, it is a great honor for me, to have the chance to greet in person, and to write an appreciation of one of the most remarkable musicians of our times.

According to the Doctoral Regulations of the University of Pécs, my task is to prove the eligibility of our Candidate for the title “Doctor Honoris Causa”.

Should I go into details, when introducing the life-work of Plácido Domingo, who conquered the world over fifty years ago, and has kept us in fever of excitement with his voice, fierce passion, love of music and men, incomparable personality and artistic qualities, ever since?

Obviously, we can illustrate his achievements with numbers as follows – the hundred and fifty roles he has sung and acted, in thirty-seven-hundred opera-performances. Or we may mention the five-hundred concerts where he held the conductor’s baton, or, why not, the over one hundred recordings… But I’m convinced, that all these together, still do not truly mirror the input Maestro Domingo has made on the music of our times. He is often called, justly, the “King of Opera” also in the world-press.

Every evening he slips into somebody else’s skin, and still remains himself. His vast musical talent is shown, from this point of view as well.

Maestro Domingo gives us a never-fading example on philanthropy, charity and humanitarian aid, too. It is enough to mention just a few occasions: the nineteen-eighty-five earthquake in Mexico or the reconstructing and rebuilding works after the twenty-o-six Katrina hurricane in New Orleans. His motto was and still is: “Music is the voice of hope”.

Besides building his own career, Maestro Domingo pays a special attention to the promotion of young and talented artists, passing his superb knowledge, and great experiences to the upcoming generations. Actually, this is the main task of all universities! He has founded the international singing competition “Operalia”, where our former and present students regularly take part.

An integral and important part of our educational mission is to present a genuine example, showing up the oeuvre of the best artists. The University of Pécs, conferring an honorary degree on Maestro Plácido Domingo, will be enriched with an example of exceptional, multifaceted artist of the highest standard, and excellence.

The one, who can pass the splendid experience of working together with Maestro Domingo to our students directly, is already with us: Tokody Ilona, our honorary professor, decorated with Kossuth Award – as they have performed together in the most renowned opera houses of the world, several times, in unforgettable opera-projects.

Besides Professor Tokody, Maestro Domingo has stepped on stage together with other excellent Hungarian artists, performing the music of our composers, such as Erkel Ferenc, or Lehár Ferenc as well. He has received many awards and honors for his achievements in the field of music, charity and, particularly, cultural relations – including the Order of Merit of the Hungarian Republic, Commander’s Cross.

Based on the former, on behalf of the Doctorate Senate of the University of Pécs, we wish to pay tribute to Maestro Plácido Domingo through conferring an honorary doctorate on him."

Acceptance speech:

"It is a privilege for me to stand here today and to be honored by this great, historic institution. I am keenly aware not only of the importance of the University of Pécs in Hungary’s academic and cultural history, but also of the city’s motto – “The Borderless City” – and its reputation as a place of ethnic and religious tolerance. This is more and more important in today’s world, when we see so much ethnic and religious intolerance. Ideally, Pécs’s motto should be the motto of every city in the world.

I first visited Hungary in 1973, and throughout my career I have worked with outstanding Hungarian artists in the world of opera: the conductor Sir Georg Solti and the singers Eva Marton, Gabor Carelli, László Polgár, Andrea Rost, Sylvia Sass, Júlia Várady, and Ilona Tokody. Tibor Rudas was the impresario who organized the Three Tenors concerts, and my assistant Nicholas Zoltán Marko, has worked with me for over thirty years are also Hungarians. I hardly need to say that I have great love and respect for the music of Hungarian composers – Béla Bartók, Zoltán Kodály, Franz Liszt, Franz Lehár, and Ferenc Erkel, among others. Not to mention the fact that as a passionate fan of the Real Madrid football team, in the city where I was born, I was a great admirer of Ferenc Puskás, who was one of our star players for many years.

In recent years I have come to feel a special gratitude toward Hungary and have become familiar not only with Budapest but also with Pécs. In 2009, the year before Pécs became the European Cultural Capital, my OPERALIA World Opera Competition held its quarter-finals and semi-finals here and its finals in Budapest. Each year, OPERALIA is held in different world cities – London, Madrid, Milan, Beijing, and so on – and it was wonderful to be able to bring it to Budapest and Pécs as well. I have also had the privilege of performing in both cities many times in the past years.

As a singer, conductor, and administrator, it is my privilege and my responsibility to help the wonderful art of opera, which is now over 400 years old, to as many people around the world as possible. Similarly, as president of Europa Nostra, a citizens’ movement for the safeguarding of Europe’s cultural and natural heritage, I am particularly aware of the importance of cities like Pécs, which preserve so much of what is valuable and important in the history of this continent. And I repeat: the motto of “Borderless City” should be a model around the world.

So it is with a mixture of pride and humility that I gladly accept today the title of Doctor Honoris Causa from the great, historic University of Pécs, and I thank everyone involved for having conferred this honor on me."

Dr. Abhay R. Vasavada is a world renowned cataract surgeon, and his expertise is in the management of challenging cataract cases in children and adults.

He established Raghudeep Eye Hospital in 1984.

Pediatric and Adult Cataract management has been his passion since 1984. Because of his vast experience, Raghudeep Eye Hospital is now a tertiary referral centre for the management of pediatric as well as adult cataracts. A dedicated team of skilled ophthalmologists, anesthetists, orthoptists and pediatric coordinators and counselors work together to provide the best care to these patients. Most of his pediatric cataract work is done on a charitable basis, as majority of children requiring treatment are from an underprivileged section of the society. Apart from the main center Raghudeep Eye Hospital has developed two outreach centers taking care of rural and poor population of Gujarat, India.

Iladevi Cataract & IOL Research Centre was established by him in 1991. This center with basic and clinical research facilities is focused on translation as well as basic research. One of the objectives is to solve some of the problems related to cataractogenesis and its management in children and young adults. Iladevi Cataract & IOL Research Centre is recognized by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. A lot of focus in his research is directed at vision threatening eye diseases.  As a result he has more than 160 publications in peer-reviewed international journals. Various research projects have been carried out in collaboration with Indian agencies ( like the Department of Science and Technology)- Govt. of India, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, as well as International Agencies ( like Creighton University, Omaha, USA, University of East Anglia, UK, Uleval University Hospital, Norway, ASCRS foundation, USA). ST. Thomas’s hospital, London, England.  He has been conducting trainee fellowship programmes for young ophthalmologists since 1990 to train them in cataract management. He has trained more than 140 national & international ophthalmologists from all over the world under this programme. He has travelled extensively across all the continents, teaching, lecturing, & performing live surgical demonstrations.  He has been involved as an important educator and scientific planner in all the major International Conferences across the globe for 25 years.

Abstract of Scientific Lecture

The Tiniest Babies: Treatment Decisions and Outcomes Near the Limit of Viability

Management of the pregnancy and neonate near the limit of viability presents difficult decisions to be made by the parents and the medical team.  The active treatment of extremely preterm infants generates questions because of the high cost and uncertain results of treatment.  However, under careful examination, the costs are no greater and the outcomes no worse than other medical treatments that generate less debate.

The Tiniest Babies Registry was developed in 2000.  This is a web-based registry of infants with birth weight below 400 grams who survived to hospital discharge.  On October 1, 2013, the Registry included 152 surviving infants with birth weight below 400 grams.  The smallest infant was 260 grams, and 18 infants were born weighing less than 300 grams.  The most immature infant in the Registry was conceived by in-vitro fertilization and born with gestational age of 21 weeks and 6 days.  All but 2 of the infants were small for gestational age, and 74% are female.  With 3 infants, Hungary ranks #5 among countries in the number of infants in the Registry.

Increased awareness that even very tiny, extremely preterm infants may survive without major handicap will lead to further improvements in the outcome of such infants.  The goal of obstetricians, neonatologist, and parents everywhere should be to maximize the number of infants who survive with an acceptable quality of life.  Ultimately, of course, our goal should be to prevent premature birth.

Prof. Mohammad Jaradat Pierre Vasarely honorary doctor of the University of Pécs since 7 November 2013.

Abstract of his inaugural address:

A particularly important role in achieving success in life is played by the education. By education as a social phenomenon we understand the transmission of life experience from one generation to another, knowing good manners and behavior in society according to these skills. Education refers to both the acquisition of theoretical knowledge and a certain socially acceptable ethical behavior. In the first instance we are talking about a person who has a good education, has an important set of theoretical concepts, is trained by professionals and has an impressive general culture.

Education does not only deal with the teaching of theoretical information, with abstractions, but above all, it aims at shaping character. The importance of education can be seen by the fact that any government in any country as poor as it is, has a ministry or department of education which is allocated a percentage of the budget.

In this reason, Aristotle said: "Those who educate children well are more to be honored than they who produce them; for these only gave them life, those the art of living well."Education of children and youth is a delicate mission that both school and family must attend inspite of all efforts; in other words, education is formed in a less formal environment such as the family, and then it continues in the institutionalized environment: the school.

Inaugural speech

My first contacts with Hungarian science were my encounters with Paul Erdős at the annual Southeastern combinatorics conference in Florida in the early 1990s. Unfortunately, my scientifc career did not start until Paul's was almost over, but, 20 years later, I can still vividly remember his legendary talks on his favourite unresolved problems, where he often offered prizes for solutions. I never wrote a paper with Paul, but my Erdős number is 2.

The work of Paul Erdős and many other Hungarian scholars that I have later met during my career - far too many to be listed here, not to mention those whose papers I have read - have without doubt been a source of inspiration for myself. Still, I have taken a different path than in traditional combinatorics by relying heavily on computers in my attempts to break new mathematical ground. Various success stories during my career have convinced me that I am on a good track, where, however, my Finnish modesty helps me to stay humble.

It is a great honor for me to be conferred this hononary title.Today, 40 years after the famous computer-aided proof of the four color theorem - saying that four colors suffice to color the regions of any map so that no two adjacent regions have the same color - the use of computers is still to some extent controversial among mathematicians. I will not go into a deeper philosophical analysis of this issue. Let me just mention that in my joint work with Hungarian scholars - Gerzson Kéri, Ferenc Szöllősi, and Sándor Szabó - the collaborators have (as far as I can see) shared my enthusiasm for computational techniques. Moreover, the Finnish organization CSC very recently granted a joint project between Aalto University and University of Pécs a substantial amount of CPU time in their supercomputers.

Professor Peter Weibel honorary doctor of the University of Pécs since 7 November 2013.

Artist, curator and theoretician.

Raised in Upper Austria he started to study French and cinematography in Paris. In 1964 he began to study medicine in Vienna, but changed soon to mathematics, with an emphasis on logic.

Peter Weibel's oeuvre can be described in the following categories: Conceptual Art, Performance, Experimental Film, Video art and Computer art.

Starting from semiotic and linguistic reflections (Austin, Jakobson, Peirce, Wittgenstein, ...) as from 1965 Peter Weibel developed an artistic language, which led him from experiment

al literature to performance. In his performative actions he explores not only the "media" language and body, but also film, video, audiotape and interactive electronic environments. Critically he analyzes their function for the construction of reality. Besides taking part in happenings with members of the Vienna Actionism he develops as from 1967 (together with Valie Export, Ernst Schmidt jr. and Hans Scheugl) an "expanded cinema". It is inspired by the American Expanded Cinema and reflects the ideological and technological conditions of cinematic representation. Peter Weibel elaborates these reflections as from 1969 in his video tapes and installations. With his television action "tv und vt works", which is broadcast by the Austrian Television (ORF) in 1972 he transcends the borders of the gal

Peter Weibel follows his artistic aims using a large variety of materials, forms and techniques: text, sculpture, installation, film and video. In 1978 he turns to music. Together with Loys Egg he founds the band "Hotel Morphila Orchester". In the mid 1980s he explores the possibilities of computer aided video processing. Beginning of the 1990s he realizes interactive computer-based installations. Here again he addresses the relation between media and the construction of reality.lery space and queries video technology in its application as a mass medium.

In his lectures and articles Weibel comments on contemporary art, media history, media theory, film, video art and philosophy. As theoretician and curator he pleads for a form of art and art history that includes history of technology and history of science. In his function as a university professor and director of institutions like the Ars Electronica, Linz, the Institute for New Media in Frankfurt and the ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe he influenced the European Scene of the so called Computer art through conferences, exhibitions and publications.

Prof. Petra Arck honorary doctor of the University of Pécs since 7 November 2013.

Short CV

Dr. Petra Arck obtained her medical training and her medical doctoral thesis at Tuebingen University in Germany in 1993. She completed research training in Reproductive Immunology at McMaster University and University of Toronto before returning to Germany to obtain her full medical licence. Her first time appointment as a faculty member was at the Charité, University 

Medicine Berlin in 2005. In 2007, she was awarded with a Canada Research Chair position. In 2010, she accepted a position as professor of experimental Feto-Maternal Medicine at the University Medical Center in Hamburg, Germany. Dr Arck has received a number of research 

awards acknowledging her interdisciplinary research focus in the field of Reproductive Immunology. She was the President of the European Society for Reproductive Immunoloy from 2007-2010. She is a mentor for young female investigators within German Society of female physicians. She has received continuous research funding over the last 15 years and is a reviewer for national and international granting agencies, scientific periodicals and graduate schools.

Abstract

Over the past decades, the understanding of adaptational processes mounted during mammalian reproduction has significantly improved. Intricate pathways occurring at the fetomaternal interface, such as the formation of a functional synapse between invading fetal trophoblast cells, and the involvement of various maternal immune cell subsets and epigenetically modified decidual stromal cells have been identified. These complex pathways synergistically create a tolerogenic niche in which the semiallogeneic fetus can develop. New insights into fetomaternal immune cross-talk may help us to understand the pathogenesis of pregnancy comp

lications as well as poor postnatal health. Moreover, the effects of maternal immune adaptation to pregnancy on autoimmune disease activity are becoming increasingly evident. Thus, insights into fetomaternal immune cross-talk not only advance our understanding of pregnancy-related complications but also may be informative on how immune tolerance can be modulated in clinical settings outside the context of reproduction.

Pierre Vasarely honorary doctor of the University of Pécs since 15 March 2013.

Career and distinctions   

He is the president of the Vasarely Foundation (since 2009), member of the Institute Art & Droit (since 2011) and honorary consul of Hungary in Marseille - France (since 2012), expert in art, single associate of the EURL Pierre Vasarely and member of the French Union of Experts (since 2003).

In 2010 he was a patron of the Pécs2010, European Capital of Culture project. Between 2004-2009 he was a President of the association for the defense and the promotion of the work of Victor Vasarely. Between 1998-2002 consultant in cultural engineering (Idée - Media - Mediterranée, Aix-en-Provence). In 1997 he was acknowledged as the unique owner of the moral right on Victor Vasarely's work. Between 1994-1997 he was the director of the Vasarely Foundation, in 1993 he was cultural consultant of the Sophia-Antipolis Foundation, Valbonne. Between 1985-1992 Special counsel  to the president of the Vasarely Foundation (Architectonic Centre of Aix-en-Provence and Didactic Museum of Gordes), between 1981-1984 attended the school of Law, Economy and Sciences of the University of Aix-Marseille III and in 1980 attended Jesus College, Cambridge, England.

From his inaugural address:

"It was from 2010, when I was named godfather for Pécs2010, European Capital of Culture, that the relationship between the Aix-Marseille University and that of Pécs started, leading to the signing in 2011 of an agreement of cooperation between the two universities. The interdisciplinary exchanges range from town-and-country planning to humanities, including visual arts.

This remarkable honor shown to me today, this 14th March 2013, on the dawn of the national holiday, by the dignitaries of your university, is considerable and goes straight to my heart."

Dr. Antal Ádám professor emeritus is honorary doctor of the University of Pécs since 14 March 2013.

Antal Ádám was born on 14 February 1930 in Jánoshalma. He pursued his degree at the Law Faculty of the University of Pécs between 1949 and 1953. After being appointed as an assistant lecturer at the Law Faculty he took part in an aspirant training in Budapest, he defended his PhD dissertation in 1958. He was appointed as a university professor in 1967, from 2000 he holds the professor emeritus title. Between 1974 and 1975 he held the position of vice dean, between 1975 and 1978 the position of dean at the Faculty, he defended his doctoral thesis in April 1999. Antal Ádám was also member of the Constitutional Court from 1990 until 1998.

He was a member - and is still a member - of several professional bodies, he participates in the work of the faculty committees, as well as in the university doctoral and habilitation committees. Thanks to his extensive language skills (German, French, reading in English and Russian), he held more than 100 lectures abroad, moreover he presented 35 national abstracts to international scientific congresses and conferences.

Based on the MTMT records, until February 2013 he was author of more than 450 professional publications and some 150 magazine articles and interviews. In addition, for nearly 40 years he has been editing certain publications of the Faculty. His work is also appreciated by the students of the Faculty, who elected the professor three times as „The Most Popular Instructor" between 2000 and 2004. Antal Ádám is honorary citizen of Pécs and Jánoshalma, but his work was also recognised trough the numerous state awards he received during his career.

In his speech at the Doctor Honoris Causa awarding ceremony he emphasized the importance of his ties to the UP: „I take it very fortunate, that I can study, cultivate and teach both the traditional and the modified, novel subjects for more than six decades, binding to the University of Pécs."

Dr. Heinz Brandl honorary doctor of the University of Pécs since 14 March 2013.

Professor Heinz Brandl was born on 29.06.1940 in Znojmo, Lower Austria (now Czech Republic). He graduated 1963 in Civil Engineering with a M.Sc. (Dipl.-Ing.) from the Technical University in Vienna, from where he also obtained the degree of Dr.techn. in Geotechnical Engineering with honours (summa cum laude) in 1966. From 1963 to 1966 he was Assistant at the Institute for Ground Engineering and Soil Mechanics at the Vienna Technical University, then Assistant Professor and Head of the Soil Mechanics Laboratory. In 1971 he was appointed Associate Professor but left the University to pursue comprehensive practice and applied research as a freelance consulting engineer on various construction sites in Austria and abroad.

In 1977 H. Brandl was appointed Full Professor for Soil and Rock Mechanics and Foundation Engineering (including Tunnelling) at the Technical University of Graz. From 1978 to 1981 he was Head of the Geotechnical Institute in Graz, and since 1981 he has been Full Professor at the Technical University of Vienna chairing the prestigious Institute for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, which was founded by Professor Karl Terzaghi in 1928.

Professor Brandl's creative work comprises about 450 scientific publications including 21 books, some published in 17 languages. The subjects cover laboratory and field testing, soil and rock mechanics, foundation engineering, slope engineering, earthworks, tunnelling, urban undergrounds, restoration of historical buildings, road and railway engineering, hydro/hydraulic engineering and environmental engineering (landfills, brownfield remediation), geosynthetics, geothermal engineering, natural disaster mitigation and rehabilitation, etc. He also published on philosophical aspects and on ethics in the profession.

From the very outset of his professional work H. Brandl has been bridging the gap between theory and practice. He has been fully responsible for around 3500 projects of civil engineering, geotechnical and environmental engineering in Austria and elsewhere: e.g. retaining structures up to 70 m height, high motorway embankments (up to 135 m), risky slope stabilizations, bridges in unstable terrain, deep soil improvements, high-rise structures, waste disposal facilities, contaminated land rehabilitation, power plants and buildings under difficult conditions (seismic areas, areas of subsidence), flood protection, etc. By creating a semi-empirical design method and taking calculated risks, he achieved not only significant cost savings but could also combine his engineering activities with many opportunities for comprehensive research work leading to numerous theoretical and practical innovations.

His practical experience comprises soil and rock investigations, general and detailed planning, design and calculation, construction work, engineering consulting, construction management and control, overall supervision, long-term monitoring and remedial works.

Professor Brandl has been active world-wide since 1968 as chairman, general reporter, state-of-the-art reporter, special lecturer, keynote lecturer, discussion leader and panellist at numerous international conferences on soil and rock mechanics, ground engineering, road and bridge engineering, environmental engineering, geosynthetics, etc. Up to now he delivered more than 450 different invited lectures covering the entire professional field.

Professor Brandl was European President of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE) for the period 1997-2001. Since 1972 he has been Chairman of the Austrian Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering. Furthermore he has been chairman and board or core member of numerous national and international technical committees for geotechnical engineering, road and transportation research, waste management and land remediation, hydropower, flood protection, natural disaster mitigation and rehabilitation, geosynthetics, and preservation/restoration of old buildings, etc. since the Seventies. He has also been a member of advisory boards, scientific committees and paper review committees of numerous international conferences worldwide, and a member of editorial boards and peer review committees of international scientific journals.

Until now his international activities have covered 83 countries in all continents. In 1992 Professor Brandl was appointed foreign member of the Royal Academy of Sciences of Belgium, and since 1997 he has been member of the New York Academy of Sciences. He received numerous national and international awards, honorary doctorates and other honours. He was the Rankine Lecturer of the year 2001 and is the Manuel Rocha Lecturer of the year 2008. Moreover he was the 1st K. Szechy Lecturer in Hungary, the 1st Nonveiller Lecturer in Croatia, the Suklje Lecturer in Slovenia etc., and he created the prestigious "Vienna Terzaghi Lecture".

Since June 2003 Prof. Brandl has been President of the Austrian Society of Engineers and Architects, which was founded already in 1848.

János Bergou honorary doctor of the University of Pécs since 14 March 2013.

Professor János Bergou is member of the Physical Sciences Department at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, he is professor of the Hunter College in the USA since 1993.

He pursued his diploma, followed by a PhD in Theoretical Physics at the Loránd Eötvös University in 1975, whereafter he worked as a scientist at the Central Research Institute for Physics until 1990. From 1980 he started teaching at the Attila József University in Szeged, however during this period he was visiting professor of several universities abroad. Between 1998 and 1999 he was also director of the Institute of Physics at the Janus Pannonius University in Pécs.

As a professor of Hunter College, he is teaching full curriculum of both undergraduate and graduate (PhD) courses, including the development and first offering at CUNY of advanced level laser physics, nonlinear and quantum optics, and quantum information/quantum computing courses for doctoral students.

Besides the numerous publications (Over 160 refereed publications, 1 book, 5 book chapters)
and lectures (70 invited talks several plenary talks at major international conferences) he was also organizer of 15 major international conferences. With the numerous awards received so far, not only his scientific, but also his extensive social and community activities have been recognized.

Dr. John Raven honorary doctor of the University of Pécs since 14 March 2013.

John Raven was born in 1936.  He received B.Sc. degree on psychology in Aberdeen in 1959, M.A. degree at London School of Economics-on in 1960, Ph.D level at Trinity College in 1982.

There have been six inter-related strands in his inaugural address:

1. "Raven Progressive Matrices

• The RPM tests measure the ability to perceive and think clearly. They are commonly regarded as the best available measures of Spearman's g. Of all the measures developed by psychologists, g is the only ability that significantly predicts occupational and life performance.
• This is not necessarily a good thing. Spearman himself was rightly concerned about the destruction of education by tests.
• Important research results include:
• Within-family variance in scores amounts to two thirds of overall variance in g. 11 year olds' g scores predict two thirds of social mobility, both upward and downward, and many other things including health and longevity.
• In all cultures, scores have increased dramatically over the years (the "Flynn Effect").
• Thus, contrary to expectations, g is hugely affected by the environment. But the important environmental factors not among those usually expected. One finding illustrating this is that, at any given date, scores are remarkably similar across most cultures regardless of their GNP, level of education, and family size.

2. Competence

• Much more important has been our research into the conceptualisation, measurement, and development of generic high-level competencies like initiative, creativity, and leadership.
• A paradigm shift is required in thinking in this area. This involves moving from a variable-based to a descriptive framework analogous that employed in chemistry and biology/ecology.

3. The educational system

• Many studies have shown that most people think that the main goal of education is to nurture high-level competencies like those mentioned above. Studies in workplaces and society confirm this. Yet the system generally fails to deliver.
• The reasons for this form a self-supporting, self-extending, system, the main components of which stem from inappropriate public management systems and a network of social forces pressing irrevocably toward hierarchy.

 4. The development of a socio-cybernetically based design for public management

• Adam Smith noted insuperable failings in "democracy" and bureaucracy.
• He saw in "the market process" a basis on which it might be possible to build an alternative design which would innovate and learn without central direction.
• His design does not and cannot work.
• We have developed an alternative design grounded in socio-cybernetics.

 5. Turning psychology inside out

• Before Newton, it was believed that moving objects behaved as they do mainly because of their internal properties. They were animated after Newton, it was mainly because they were acted upon by networks of invisible external forces which could nevertheless be mapped, measured, and harnessed.
• A similar re-orientation is required in ways of thinking about the determinants of human behaviour.

 6. Mapping the socio cybernetic forces that have the future of humankind and the planet in their grip

• Over endless millennia, numerous alternative management systems have been shown to be viable.
• Yet all have been eliminated by powerful social forces.
• We have been trying to find ways of mapping, measuring, and harnessing these forces in ways paralleling Newton's.
• It emerges that it is the endless senseless work constituting a hierarchy which compels participation in itself that is destroying our habitat, thus destroying our chances of surviving as a species."

Jari Pekka Olavi Vilén honorary doctor of the University of Pécs since 13 December 2012.

The former Ambassador of Finland, His Excellency Jari Pekka Olavi Vilén was nominated for the honorary doctor title by professor Béla Horváth, dean of the Faculty of Illyés Gyula. According to the justification, the Ambassador, during his five years of service (between 2007-2012) found it important to strengthen the more and more diversifying relations between the two countries. Having a degree in pedagogy, His Excellency emphasized the importance of the Finnish-Hungarian language relationship. He helped and supported the foundation of the network of the Finnish Lecturers at the Hungarian universities. He urged the setting up of new sister city relationships and facilitated the developments of the already existing relationships. He enlarged the network of the Honorary Consuls of Finland in Hungary, through which he extended and made the Finnish-Hungarian relations active. As a result of this activity there are honorary consuls working in Pécs and in Szeged these days.

During his service as Ambassador he paid several visits to the Consulate in Pécs and in Szekszárd too, where a larger colony if Finnish people reside. During his visits in Szekszárd he visited the Illyés Gyula Faculty several times and supported the organization of different cultural programmes. His Excellency even gave a lecture during the Finnish Week in Szekszárd.

Mihai Razvan Ungureanu honorary doctor of the University of Pécs since 13 December 2012.

The Rector and the Senate of the University of Pécs has approved the nomination of Mr. Mihai Razvan Ungureanu, former prime minister of Romania to be its honorary doctor, who had been nominated by professor Attila Miseta, the dean of the Faculty of Medicine. As stated in the nomination letter, the teaching staff members of the Faculty of Medicine had been in close collaboration with the medical and pharmacist colleagues from Tirgu Mures. During the past five years the UP Faculty of Medicine has received appr. 300 students from Tirgu Mures on a tuition fee waiver, mainly for part time education. More than sixty teaching staff members from Pécs have taught seminars of various lengths in Tirgu Mures. Throughout the various discussions it became clear that without the independent Hungarian education unit the whole medical education in Tirgu Mures would be in danger. The government of Mihai Razvan Ungureanu recognized that the peaceful living together of the neighbouring ethnic groups was the key pillar of EU's sustainability and that preserving mother tongue was one of its most important elements.

Prof. Dr. Béla Kádár honorary doctor of the University of Pécs since 8 November 2012.

Dr. Béla Kádár, an economist and a full member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences was born in Pécs on 21 May 1934. He finished his elementary and secondary schools in Pécs and took his school leaving examination at Nagy Lajos Secondary Grammar School in 1952.

During his career, which was abundant of achivements, he worked as a researcher of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and as a professor at foreign universities. Between 1990-1994, he was the Minister for Foreign Trade, between 1994-1998 he was the chair of the Budget Comittee of the Parliament. Between 1999-2008 he was the chair of the Hungarian Economic Association then the honorary life chairman.

His fields of research are the development of the economy and industry, international division of labour, international relations and comparative economics. He is an author and co-author of 19 books and more than 400 scientific papers. Almost 200 of his works were published in foreign languages.

His outstanding scientific and public activity has been acknowledged with several prizes and awards.

The community of the University of Pécs highly appreciates Béla Kádárs's scientific merits and his unselfish and exemplary intention which enriched the results of the Hungarian and international economic sciences and contributed to the economic and scientific development of the South-Transdanubian Region and the city of Pécs and the intellectual development of the Faculty of Business and Economics.

Prof. Dr. Peter Hay honorary doctor of the Faculty of Law of the University of Pécs since 8 November 2012.

Peter Hay was born in Berlin, 17 September 1935. He studied law and graduated at the University of Michigan (with highest honours) in 1958. He was a Michigan Foreign Law Fellow at the Universities of Göttingen and Heidelberg in Germany between 1959‑1960. After that he was employed as an instructor of law at the University of Michigan. In 1961, he became an assistant Professor of Law at the University of Pittsburgh. He changed to the University of Illinois in 1963, became an Associate Professor of Law in 1964 and then a professor of law in 1966.  He was elected Dean of the Faculty in 1980 and served in that office until 1989. From 1989 until 1991 he was the Alumni Distinguished Professor of Law at the University of Illinois. He took emeritus status at that University in 1991. In 1991, Peter Hay became a professor of law at Emory University; in 1992, he was awarded the title of L.Q.C. Lamar Professor of Law. He took emeritus status at Emory in 2012.

Since 1975, he has been Honorary Professor at the University of Freiburg. He was the Chair for Civil Law, Private International & Foreign Law and Comparative Law at the University of Dresden between 1994-2000 and the Dean of the Faculty between 1997-2000. Since 2000 he has been a professor emeritus. Since 1996, he has been a Recurrent Visiting Professor of Law at the Central European University (Budapest) and, since 2005, a visiting professor, also annually, at Bucerius Law School in Hamburg. During his career, he was also a visiting professor at the University of Michigan and Stanford University (both United States) and at the Universities of Bonn and Freiburg i. Br. (Germany).

He is an expert of law in the field of Conflict of Laws (U.S. and German), Contracts, Sales (U.S., German, and Vienna Convention), International Litigation (U.S. and German), Comparative Law, International Civil Procedure, Family Law (German).

He has been the Member of the German Council for Private International Law since 1996; the German Society of International Law since 1995. He was also the U.S. Expert for the Convention on the Law Applicable to Agency of the Hague Conference on Private International Law between 1974‑1976; the Convention was concluded on 14 March 1978. He was a Consultant at the Department of State Advisory Committee on Private International Law between 1974‑1978; and 1987-1991. He has been the Member of the Board of Editors of the American Journal of Comparative Law since 1961; and the Cahiers de Droit Européen, Brussels, since 1970.

Honours and Acknowledgments 
Professor Hay was elected to become an associate academician of the International Academy of Comparative Law in 1979; and then a titular member in 1999. He is the member of the American Law Institute since 1984 and the American Academy of Foreign Law since 1986, both by election. In 1989 he won the Research Prize of the Alexander von Humboldt-Foundation, the tenure of the prize was September 1989 - May 1990. He was lecturing at the University of Bonn as a Fulbright Research Professor between January and July of 1992. As recipient of the Jean Monnet-Professorship, he lectured in the summer semester of 1994 at the University of Bonn. He is an honorary member of the Institut für ausländisches und internationales Recht, at the Juristische Fakultät of the Technische Universität Dresden. He is an honorary member of the German- American Lawyers' Association.

The professional relationship between Professor Hay and Professor László Kecskés, the Head of the Department of Civil Law (Faculty of Law) started in the late 1990's. Between 1996 and 1999, they had a common course on European law at the Central European University (Budapest). Professor Hay visited the Law Faculty several times and he gave more lectures, which attracted the great interest of the students and colleagues from the teaching staff. The honorary doctor title of Peter Hay boosts the prestige of the University of Pécs.

Prof. Dr. h. c. mult. Reinhold Würth honorary doctor of the Faculty of Law of the University of Pécs since 8 November 2012.

Prof. Dr. h. c. mult. Reinhold Würth (1935 - ) was only 19 years old, when he took over his father's wholesale screw business. Under his leadership, the small family enterprise developed within decades into a world class multinational large concern: The Würth Group today consists of over 400 companies and is active in more than 80 countries worldwide. In the fiscal year of 2011, the company turnover was 9.7 billion euros. The corporate group has today more than 65,000 employees.

In 1999 Prof. Reinhold Würth has founded the Interfaculty Institut of Entrepreneurship at the University of Karlsruhe in Germany, which he was a director of until 2003. There he taught the students what is important in establishing and running a business. Reinhold Würth is now Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Würth Group.
He supports the research, science, education, arts and culture, besdides he is known as a generous patron. The art collcection of Reinhold Würth is one of the most important European private collections. It is exhibited  in four museums in Germany and ten associated galleries at the corporate headquarters of the international Würth companies.

The Würth Group appeared in 1988 in Hungary. The Würth Technology Ltd. in 1991 established the Reinhold and Carmen Würth Foundation to support university and college education, nature conservation and environmental educational work, to aid children with multiple disadvanteges and young people living in foster homes as well as elderly living in nursing homes. Since 1994, the Foundation supports those students of the Faculty of Law of the University, who are socially disadvantaged but have a strong academic record. Since its establishment, the Foundation has granted over 250 students Würth scholarship at numerous universities.

The recognition of the company's performance as well as the social and cultural commitment of Reinhold Würth is reflected in numerous awards. He has been awarded the honorary doctorate from the University of Tübingen (Germany), Palermo (Italy) and Louisville (Kentucky, USA) and in 2012 the University of Pécs.

Professor Tuomo Lahdelma was born in Mikkeli 1953. He completed his baccalaureate in the Lyceum of Mikkeli in 1972 and finished his MA degree in the University of Jyväskylä in 1976, with Finnish Language and World literature as my major subjects. Right after his graduation, and a half-a-year grant in Hungary, he was employed by the department of Literature in the University of Jyväskylä. Since then he has worked there, except for those periods of time when he has been a visiting professor in universities abroad.

The main events in his career have been the following

Degree of Master of Arts, Degree of Licentiate of Arts, Doctor of Philosophy, Docent of Hungarian literature at University of Jyväskylä.

Honorary doctor and professor of the Faculty of Law since 12 March 2012.

Werner Ogris was born in Vienna, 9 July 1935. He studied law at the University of Vienna and graduated in 1958. After that he was employed as a scientific assistant at the European Legal History Institute of the University of Vienna. In February 1962 he became habilitated doctor of German legal history and Austrian constitution and administration history.

From 1962-1966 he was a professor at the Freie Universität Berlin. In 1966 he was called back to the University of Vienna, where he was teaching uninterruptedly for 74 semesters until he received the professor emeritus title in 2003. He was the dean of the Faculty of Law in the academic year 1972/73.

From 1968-1992 he was co-editor of the Savigny Foundation for Legal History. In 1992 he was guest professor at the University of Kansas. In the academic year 2005/06 he was dean and professor at a private college Bratislavska vysoka Škola prava.

Acknowledgements: in 1961 he received the Theodor Körner Prize. In 1972 he became a correspondent member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, from 1975 he ha been a full member. From 1975 he was the chairman of the Committee of the Savigny Foundation. From 1995 he has been the chairman of the Austrian Legal History Committee that was formed from the Committee of the Savigny Foundation. In 1985 he was elected to become an associate member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences in 1988 he was elected to become an associate member of the Royal Academy of Sciences of the Netherlands. In 1993 he received the honorary doctor title of the Charles University in Prag and of the Comenius University of Bratislava. In 2010 he received the First Class of the Austrian Order of Merit for Sciences and Arts.

Professor Ogris maintains a close relationship with the legal historians in Pécs. He is the engine of the lecturer-exchange and guest lectures at the law faculties of the University of Vienna and the University of Pécs. In 2007 a book was published about his work with the title "Portraits of European Legal Historians I. Werner Ogris". In the last decades he has held very popular lectures for students of legal history in Pécs. His recommendations, pieces of advice have always been welcome among students and lecturers of the Faculty of Law, University of Pécs. The honorary doctor title of Werner Ogris boosts the prestige of the University of Pécs.

Honorary Doctor and Professor of the Faculty of Humanities since 21 October 2011.

Bernd Neumann studied for his degree in Education between 1963 and 1966 in Bremen, where he was as a teacher for five years. He was elected as a member of the Bremen State Assembly in 1971, as of 1973 he became the chairman of the CDU Group. Between 1979 and 2008 he held the position as the chairman of the CDU for the City-State of Bremen. Since 1987 he has been the member of the Bundestag. 

Since November 2005 Bernd Neumann has been the Minister of State in the Federal Chancellery and Commissioner for Cultural and Media Affairs. He is entirely committed to the development of German-Hungarian cultural, scientific, artistic relations. He played a very important role in the establishment of the Foundation Department of German History and Culture in South-East-Central Europe in February 2007. The Department has been delivering successful work for the last nearly 5 years on the field of science, education and public life. A decision of the Minister, the Department was supported by almost 100 million HUF for the first five years. 

The Foundation Department of German History and Culture in South-East-Central Europe has been contributing directly and indirectly to developing the international relations of the University's Faculty of Humanities. As a result, the Faculty is cooperating with many great institutions, such as the Institute for German Culture and History in Southeast Europe (Munich), the Federal Institute for German Culture and History in Eastern Europe (Oldenburg), the Herder Institute, the Regensburg Southeast Institute (Marburg), the Institute for the History and Regional Studies of Danube Swabians (Tübingen), and the scientific cultural institutions of surrounding countries (Croatia, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia and Slovenia). 

These successful co-operations could not have been realized with the support and the personal commitment of Bernd Neumann, whose Doctor et Professor Honoris Causa title is raising the reputation and the academic prestige of the University of Pécs.

Denys Neville Wheatley took his first degree in 1961 at King's College University of London in Cell Physiology and completed his PhD in two years later at the Chester Beatty Research Institute, Institute of Cancer Research in London before leaving to take up a research Fellowship with Alistair Currie in Aberdeen University, which has been his base ever since, although he has spent much time abroad. 

The professor has been Editor-in-Chief of Cell Biology Institution for 11 years. In 1998, the journal was languishing as the official publication of the International Federation for Cell Biology (IFCB), but in the last decade, submissions have risen 6-fold. 

Well known for his research on the cell cycle in relation to cancer, amino acid metabolism and protein degradation, primary cilia and centrioles, as well as diffusion theory in biology, he retired from his University post in 2005 and has since spent his time running a successful Biomedical Editing Services outfit. He also continues to work on cancer research as Chief Scientific Officer of BioCancer-Treatment International, based in Hong Kong. He is an adjunct professor at the Wayne State Medical School in Detroit MI, USA. The professor has written many books and published nearly 300 papers. 

For Denys Wheatley's scientific achievements, and his 20 years of support for the University of Pécs, Rector József Bódis conferred Doctor Honoris Causa title upon the professor.

Doctor et professor honoris causa of the Pollack Mihály Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology since 21 October 2011.

Gerhard Hausladen studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Munich and kept on working as a research associate with the institute until he finished his Doctorate in 1980. After working for private companies he decided to establish his own engineering office, IB Hausladen, in 1986. At the University of Kassel he worked as a professor for many years, teaching HVAC with a focus on energy efficiency. 

In 2001 he became head of the institute for building climate and HVAC technology at the TU Munich. Since then he is known for his expertise in the field of Green Building Design and consults many national and international organizations. The establishment and education of the Climadesigner© specialization and the accreditation of a unique Master programme also belong to his revolutionary innovations. The latter is a new, interdisciplinary planning specialization, which offers comprehensive solutions on the field of sustainable built environment. 

The professor was the chief of several international and German research projects, currently leading the main project of the Energydesign Department of the Pollack Mihály Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology: the Energy Design and Complex Building Climatology.

Honorary doctor of the Faculty of Business and Economics of the University of Pécs since 10 March 2011.

Dr. Pauli was born in 1956 in Antwerpen. He studied economics and graduated from Loyola's University in Belgium, and obtained his MBA from INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France.

He is a member of the Club of Rome and the Club of Budapest as a popular character in business and academic environment. He is a visiting lecturer and professor at universities in Europe, Africa and Latin America. 

Under his leadership, a small European company pioneered an ecological factory. He founded the "Zero Emissions Research and Initiatives" (ZERI) at the United Nations University in Tokyo, and subsequently established The Global ZERI Network, redesigning production and consumption into clusters of industries inspired by natural systems.  He is dedicated to design and implement a society and industries, which respond to people's needs using what is available from nature.

Developing these business models he established The Blue Economy, stimulating entrepreneurship while setting up new standards towards sustainability. The Blue Economy principles permit to respond to the basic needs of all with what we have. It stands for a different way of designing business by using the resources available in cascading systems, where the waste of one product becomes the input to create a new cash flow. It aims at creating jobs, building up social capital and rising income while saving the environment. An international community of companies, innovators and scientists support the concept, providing open source access to develop, implement and share prosperous business models which targets to improve natural ecosystems and quality of life.

The Blue Economy book was translated to Hungarian at the Faculty of Business and Economics, University of Pécs in 2010. Günter Pauli participated at the conference organised for the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the faculty, where he introduced his book, and held a fantastic presentation. He expressed his intents of contributing with the faculty in introducing the Blue Economy to Hungary.

Johann Theodore Povlishock is chair of the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and director of the Commonwealth Center for the Study of Brain Injury, professor of neurosurgery at VCU.

His research interests focus on traumatic brain injury in terms of its neuronal and vascular consequences and their potential therapeutic modifications. He published more than 300 manuscripts and over 30 books and chapters, with an SCI of close to 10000, and a h-index of 53.

Dr. Povlishock's many honors include serving as president of the Neurotrauma Society, several awards for teaching excellence, and two Javits Neuroscience Investigator Awards. He is editor-in-chief of the Journal of Neurotrauma and referee for 18 international journals and serves as a member of the National Advisory Neurological Disorders and Stroke Council.

Professor Povlishock first visited Pécs in 1998. He personally mentored two research fellows and participated in the mentorship or training of five Hungarian researchers at VCU. As mentor and primary investigator he contributed to a Martin Rodbell Scholarship and a Fogarty International Collaboration Award which meant $100.000 support for 3 years to the Neuropathological Laboratory, and he also acted as a founder and five times as co-chair of the Pannonian Symposium on CNS Injury between 2000 and 2010.

Prof. Barry Hilary Valentine Topping is the honorary doctor of the Pollack Mihály Faculty of Engineering, University of Pécs since 4 November 2010.

Prof. Barry Hilary Valentine Topping is currently the director of the Computational Technology Solution company, Emeritus Professor of the Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, United Kingdom.

Prof. Topping wrote or edited more than 200 publications about the application of information technology and computation methods in engineering sciences. He was a professional consultant in several government and industrial projects. He gave lectures in many countries of Europe, in China and in the United States of America.

In 1990 hewas awarded the Telfor Premium Prize of the Institution of Civil Engineers. In 2001 the American Society of Civil Engineers gave Prof. Topping the best article prize. Currently he is co-editor of the „Advances in Engineering Software" and „Computers & Structures" international magazines. Prof. Topping organized in the last more than 25 years engineering conferences of different kinds anually.

Prof. Topping visited the Pollack Mihály Faculty of Engineering in the last 6 years regularly and participated in the scientific life of the faculty actively. He founded the PhD library at the faculty. Prof. Topping participated in the PhD & DLA symposium organized at the faculty every year and he contributed to the preparation of PhD students. He also gives lectures regularly at the „High Performance Computations for Engineering" PhD course of the faculty. Professor Barry Hilary Valentine Topping also organized „The First International Conference on Parallel, Distributed and Grid Computing for Engineering" at the Pollack Mihály Faculty of Engineering.

Professor David Nicolaas Reinhoudt is the honorary doctor of the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Pécs since 4 November 2010.

David N. Reinhoudt was born in the Netherlands in 1942. He studied Chemical Technology at the Delft University, he graduated in 1969. His research is focused on supramolecular chemistry and nanotechnology with nanofabrication, molecular recognition, non-covalent synthesis and "lab-on-a-chip" technology as the major fields. Since 1978 he is a professor of the Dutch University of Twente.

Since 2002 he is the chairman of the Board of NanoNed, the Dutch Network for Nanotechnology. He is a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences, Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and Fellow of the Institute of Physics. He is the author of more than 940 scientific publications, patents, review articles, and books. He has been honored with the Izatt-Christensen award (1995), the Simon Stevin Mastership (1998). He is an honorary doctor of the University of Parma (2007), was awarded the medal of merit of the University of Twente (2007), and is Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion (2002).

Professor Reinhoudt is one of the most well known chemistry research laboratory professionals. He is member of the editorial boards of prestigious American and European magazines on the field of chemistry and nanotechnology (e.g. Journal of Supramolecular Chemistry Synthesis, Perspectives in Supramolecular Chemistry, Langmuir Chemistry - A European Journal; European Journal of Organic Chemistry, Journal of Supramolecular Chemistry Synthesis).

Prof. Reinhoudt supported Hungarian science during his international activities. He participated in the Innovative Research Team supporting the Science Building project. The University of Pécs was honoured to send a PhD research team as part of a new programme to the laboratory of Prof. Reinhoudt. He was involved in many international scientific programmes. Until now he supervised more than 100 PhD Students, a number of which are now in independent academic positions.

Honorary doctor of the Faculty of Adult Education and Human Resources Development of the University of Pécs. He received his honoris causa degree in Canada 24 April 2010.

The name of Zoltan P. Dienes (1916-) stands with those of Jean Piaget and Jerome Bruner as a legendary figure whose theories of learning have left a lasting impression on the field of mathematics education. Dienes' name is synonymous with the Multi-base blocks (also known as Dienes blocks) which he invented for the teaching of place value. He also is the inventor of Algebraic materials and logic blocks, which sowed the seeds of contemporary uses of manipulative materials in mathematics instruction. Dienes' place is unique in the field of mathematics education because of his theories on how mathematical structures can be taught from the early grades onwards using multiple embodiments through manipulatives, games, stories and dance.

Dienes' notion of embodied knowledge presaged other cognitive scientists who eventually came to recognize the importance of embodied knowledge and situated cognition - where knowledge and abilities are organized around experience as much as they are organized around abstractions. Dienes was an early pioneer in what was later to be called sociocultural perspectives and democratization of learning.

Dr. Dienes was born in Hungary and moved to England at the age of 16. He has since worked around the globe spreading his vision of learning math through play to such places as England, France, Germany, Italy, Australia, New Guinea, USA, Canada, Chile, Brazil, Argentina and others, immigrating to Canada in 1966. He developed the new field of Psychomathematics (psychology of mathematics learning) and was the director of /the Centre de Recherche en Psychomathématiques /at the Université de Sherbrooke (Quebec) for many years. After his retirement, he taught part time in the Department of Education at Acadia University for a while and many local grade school teachers would remember visits to their classrooms. His latest book is a collection of articles written for the New Zealand Mathematics Magazine: "A Concrete Approach to the Architecture of Mathematics".

Dr. András Zempléni, honorary doctor of the Faculty of Humanities, University of Pécs since 11 March 2010.

Dr. András Zempléni is a cultural anthropologist (ethnologist), research professor of the National Scientific Research Council in Paris, professor of the Université Paris X - Nanterre, Department of Ethnology and Comparative Sociology, and one of most successful Hungarian social scientists living abroad. His professional career is connected to France and French science, where he emigrated at the age of sixteen after the fall of the 1956's revolution.

He is a specialist of African cultures and societies. He has been doing fieldwork in West Africa for nearly 50 years now. Beside his research in Africa, Dr. Zempléni has been present in Hungarian scientific life too since the downfall of the Communist regime. In accordance with his previous work he primarily studies the political re-burials after the fall of the Communist regime. As a scholar, András Zempléni has fulfilled the role of a bridge for four decades between French and Hungarian science. He has been a guest professor at the Department of Ethnography and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Pécs's Faculty of Humanities since the beginning of the Department's EU-6 Marie-Curie Fellowship for the Transfer of Knowledge project. He actively takes part in the life of the Department and plays a decisive role in the improvement of the Department's international relations and the enhancement of its scientific reputation.

Mr. Antti Pippo, honorary doctor of the Pollack Mihály Faculty of Engineering, University of Pécs since 11 March 2010.

Mr. Antti Piippo finished his engineering studies at the Helsinki College of Technology in 1973. Since then he has mainly been active in the industry. He was and still is a member of several well-known forums and company management committees:

• Federation of Finnish Metal, Engineering and Electrotechnical Industries (1990-1997)
• Smapo Enterprise Insurance Company (1994-1996)
• Garantia Insurance Company (1995-1997)
• Finnish National Fund for Research and Development (1996-1998)
• Helsinki School of Economics And Business Administration (1998-2001)
• Helsinki University of Technology (2000-2004)

He has published numerous articles in Finnish economic daily papers and held many presentations and seminars in Finland and abroad.

Mr. Antti Piippo is also the founder and principal owner of the company named Elcoteq with which the University of Pécs has an excellent long-term relationship.

In 2001 the president of Estonia gave Mr. Antti Piippo the St. Mary's Cross II. Class honour, and in 2007 the president of the Republic of Hungary awarded Mr. Piippo the Hungarian Order of Merit.

Mr. Gerhard Pieschl, honorary doctor of the Faculty of Adult Education and Human Management Resources, University of Pécs since 11 March 2010.

Gerhard Pieschl was born on the 23^rd of January 1934 in Czechoslovakia in an ethnically German family. He finished his high school and higher education studies in philosophy and theology in the German cities of Königstein, Freiburg and Mainz.

He was ordained a Roman Catholic priest in the Limburg Cathedral on the 8^th of December in 1960. Between 1962  and 1968 he was vice-governor of the Hadmari Episcopal Hall and parish priest in Bad Ems, Bad Schwalbach and Frankfurt.

In September 1977 Pope Paul VI appointed him the Misenum's honorary bishop and in October he was enthroned in the Cathedral of Frankfurt as Limburg's honorary bishop. In September of 1979 he became the dean of the Cathedral of Limburg. From May of 1979 till May of 2000 he worked as the German Episcopal Conference's catholic ministerial law enforcement commissioner.

Mr. Gerhard Pieschl's scientific work focuses on the study of the connections between the Catholic Church and human rights. He gave an impressive presentation on this subject at the University of Pécs, Faculty of Adult Education and Human Resources Development, entitled The Catholic Church and human rights - Support and omissions.

Honorary doctor of the Faculty of Law, University of Pécs since 11 March 2010.

Professor Doctor Norbert Lammert is a German politician, President of the Bundestag, the lower house of the German parliament.

Norbert Lammert was born in 1948, in Bochum, Germany. He graduated from secondary school in 1967 and did his military service from 1967 to 1969. After completing his military service Professor Lammert studied political science, sociology, modern history and social economics at the University of Bochum and at the University of Oxford, England. He earned his degree in 1972 but carried on studying at the University of Ruhr in Bochum to get a doctorate in social sciences, which he accomplished in 1975. Although he worked as a lecturer, he became a member of the Bochum City Council in 1975. He was elected member of the Bundestag in 1980, and has been an MP ever since. Professor Lammert served as Vice President of the Bundestag from 2002 to 2005 when he was elected  President of the Lower House. He is an honorary associate professor of many foundations and academies. Professor Lammert is well known for his ability to adapt scientific discoveries and theoretical methods to professional, practical routine. He is also the Deputy Director of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation since 2001.

Professor Peter Möhringer, honorary doctor of the Pollack Mihály Faculty of Engineering, University of Pécs since 11 March 2010.

The Pollack Mihály Faculty of Engineering first contacted the Bavarian higher education institute in 1983, and as a result of this, the first formal cooperation agreement was signed on the 21st of May in 1985 in Würzburg. At that time a formal agreement between two institutions that were separated by the iron curtain was quite unique not only in Hungary but in the whole Federal Republic of Germany too.

Professor Möhringer has always had a prominent role on behalf of the German partner in making this partnership work and advance for more than thirty years. He has been in charge of Hungarian relations at the German institute since the beginning. He has always shown genuine interest in this task and carried it out at a high standard. The fact that he even learned Hungarian proves how deeply he cares about this mission.

He has organised a summer internship for Hungarian students of electrical engineering in Bavaria for years. Thereafter, since the beginning of the SOCRATES/ERASMUS programme, he has organised the study abroad programmes of Hungarian students at every faculty of the German college.

In addition to this, every year he holds presentations in Pécs at the Department of Electrical Engineering as part of the traditional professional days of the Department.

Dr. Sveinung Lunde, honorary doctor of the Medical School, University of Pécs since 11 March 2010.

Dr. Sveinung Lunde earned his law degree at the University of Oslo. He became an education and health politician as a member of the Norwegian Conservative Party. He spent three years as a member of the Norwegian Parliament and its Education Committee and eight years as a member of the local government in Oslo. He was the chairman of the local government's Health and Social Affairs Committee. Since 1996 he has been the executive director of Björknes College and since 2001 the president of the Board of Directors of Lovisenberg Hospital. 

He has been affiliated with the University of Pécs Medical School's English Programme since the end of 1990's. He cooperates with College International to recruit students for the Medical School of Pécs. Dr. Lund has personally played an important role in increasing the number of Norwegian students at our Faculty year after year. The collaboration between the University of Pécs Medical School, Björknes College and the University of Oslo Faculty of Sciences began at his initiative in 2006. As a part of this cooperation, the Medical School of the University of Pécs will accept second year students taught in Oslo. 

Professor Sveinung Lunde's creativive and flexibil approach has made an extraordinary contribution to the cooperation between Pécs and Oslo.

Honorary doctor of the Medical School of the University of Pécs since 15 October 2009.

Dr. Gabriel Elgavish is professor at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics University of Alabama at Birmingham and co-professor of the Institute of Internal Medicine and Cardiology. He was born in Hungary in 1942 but soon emigrated to Israel. He earned his basic degree in 1967 at the Chemistry Department of the Hebrew University where he later completed his Master's degree in 1972. He earned his Ph.D. degree in 1978 at the Wizmann Institute in NMR spectroscopy. He later settled down in the United States of America. He has been working for the Department of Biochemistry of the University of Alabama at Birmingham since 1981. 

In the last fifteen years Professor Elgavish has played a key role in the training of the Medical School's young instructors and in their academic progress. Many colleagues of the Heart Institute spent years in his laboratory and most of them earned their PhD degrees under his guidance. 

Dr. Elgavish has done pioneering work in the development of myocardial NMR and MRI technologies and an internationally recognized, excellent expert. As a compatriot of our country, he maintains excellent ongoing relations with the Hungarian Institute of Nuclear Medicine. His cooperation with the colleagues of the Heart Institute is also outstanding.

Honorary doctor of the Faculty of Business and Economics of the University of Pécs since 15 October 2009.

Geert Hofstede was born in 1928 in the Netherlands. He earned his first degree in 1953 at the Delft Technical University. He received his summa cum laude doctoral degree at Groningen University's Faculty of Social Psychology. 

He first published his analysis based on IBM employee attitude surveys in 1971. Since then the dimensions and metaphors that he has developed are considered fundamental in both psychology and in management studies. 

Dr. Hofstede's first book "Culture's Consequences" was first in 1980. The first edition of his next book, written not only for competent experts but also for the general public, "Cultures and Organizations: software of the mind" came out in 1991. This version (followed by many more editions) was published in seventeen languages, including Hungarian too. On the occasion of the book's Hungarian publication the author visited the University of Pécs and gave a "sold out" lecture to the students of the Faculty of Business and Economics at the Halasy-Nagy Aula in Rákóczi Street. 

Dr. Geert Hofstede is Professor Emeritus of the University of Tilburg, research scholar of the University of Maastricht and honorary doctor of many universities. He expressed his intention to keep in touch with the Faculty of Business and Economics and its departments, and as part of this cooperation he gave permission to use his most recent surveys, providing an opportunity for all those interested to join in the international research on executive goals.

Honorary doctor of Polláck Mihály Faculty of Engineering of the University of Pécs since 15 October 2009.

József Finta was born in 1935 in Kolozsvár. He earned his degree in 1958 at the Faculty of Architecture of the Budapest University of Technology. He began his career as an architect right after graduation at the LAKÓTERV Architectural Studio, working first as a designer, then as head of the Studio, and finally as chief architect and deputy director. His first success was the Garzon House in Dunaújváros, designed in 1961. He received the Ybl prize in 1965. He became a widely known architect in the country when he designed the Duna Intercontinental Hotel (1966-1969). 

In 1994 he established the Finta and Co. Architectural Studio with all of his colleagues at the LAKÓTERV Studio, which has by now grown into an large office with forty employees. The most important works of the Studio are: Police Palace, Westend City Center, Information Technology Building of Budapest University of Technology-Eötvös Loránd University. 

The various departments that teach architectural subjects at the Pollack Mihály Faculty of Engineering of the University of Pécs have maintained academic and professional relations with the Finta and Co. Architectural Studio for several decades, and the company took a leading role in the establishment of a university level training programme of architects in Pécs. 

Dr. Finta personally took part in the development of the training programme, and also gave a chance to many students of architecture and graduated architects to pursue their professional career at his Studio and participate in projects of an international standard. He has accomplished outstanding work in the organization of the DLA Master's Scool and worked as a professor and member in the Board of Masters. Since 2004 he has helped the work of the Pollack Mihály Faculty of Engineering as a member of the Doctoral Defence Committee. 

Dr. József Finta is the most distinguished architect in Hungary, regular member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Kossuth and Ybl prize winning architect and member of the management of several professional organizations. He is the designer of Hungary's biggest and most prestigious architectural projects and an internationally renowned expert.

Honorary doctor of the Medical School of the University of Pécs since 15 October 2009.

Dr. Pier Giorgio Natali was the director of the Regina Elena Cancer Institute, Division of Immunology in Rome until his retirement on 31^st December in 2008. He graduated summa cum lade at the La Sapienza Medical School in Rome in 1966. He also worked as the director of the Poloncologico Institute, a leading nationwide institute for oncology treatment in Italy. Professor Natali is one of the most well-known clinical immunologists also doing basic research and a very important academic personality. 

He has excellent relations with the world's leading immunologists. He is one of the leaders of the Italian prevention programme for oropharyngeal cancer. Several associates of the Public Health Institute took part in joint research on this topic. 

He has been working together with the Public Health Institute of the Pécs Medical School for more than twenty years. In 1988 he became the director of the Regina Elena Cancer Institute's Division of Immunology in Rome. He is also head of Immunology and Molecular Pathology since 2001. 

Several colleagues of the Public Health Institute took part in academic field trips of various durations at Professor Natali's institute. Useful collaboration evolved in many fields of immunohistochemstry, like the MENA antibody, which he personally made available for the Institute. This collaboration has resulted in several joint presentations.

Honorary doctor of the Faculty of Humanities, University of Pécs since 7 May 2009.

Yevgeny Aleksandrovich Yevtushenko is a Russian poet, and also a novelist, essayist, dramatist, screenwriter, actor, editor and teacher. He was born on 18 July 1933 in Zima, Siberia. His first book of poems, The Prospects of the Future was published when he was nineteen years old, but he had been writing poems since age ten.

After the Second World War he moved to Moscow and studied at the Gorky Institute of Literature from 1951 to 1954. In 1952 he joined the Union of Soviet Writers. His poems were not welcomed by the Soviet Government because of the harsh criticism he expressed towards the regime, but due to the underground samizdat press they gained him great recognition among the people. As part of the Soviet new wave, he made great efforts to make poetry democratic. In 1989 Yevtushenko was elected as a representative in the Soviet Parliament (Congress of Peoples Deputies), where he was a member of the pro-democratic group supporting Mikhail Gorbachev.

Yevtushenko became one of the best known poets of the 1950s and 1960s in the Soviet Union. In 1961, he was featured on the cover of Time magazine. In 1991 he received the American Liberties Medallion, the highest honour conferred by the American Jewish Committee. In 1993, he received a medal of 'Defender of Free Russia,' which was awarded for acts in support of democracy to those who took part in resisting the hard-line Communist coup in August 1991. In July 2000 the Russian Academy of Sciences named a star in his honour. One year later, in 2001 his childhood home in Zima Junction, Siberia, was restored and opened as a permanent museum of poetry. Today he divides his time between Russia and the United States, where he teaches Russian and European poetry and European cinema history.

Honorary doctor of the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Pécs since 12 March 2009.

Professor Kristóf Nyíri is a philosopher and a distinguishedprofessor whose specialty is philosophy of language, philosophy of communication and history of philosophy. His latest publications are about the function of pictures in thinking and the circulation of time. He graduated in 1968 from the Eötvös Lóránd University's Faculty of Humanities, where he studied mathematics and philosophy. Wittgenstein was in the centre of his research in philosophy of language and his "The philosophy's short history: from Vedas to Wittgenstein", co-authored with Ferenc L. Lendvai, was first published in 1974. He has been teaching philosophy since 1971 and is currently professor of philosophy at the Institute of Applied Pedagogy and Psychology at Budapest University of Technology and Economics.

He became a correspondent member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 1993 and a regular member in 2001. He is also a member of the Institute International de Philosophie since 2006. Between 1995 and 2005 he was the director of the Institute for Philosophical Research of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. In the autumn-winter semester of 2006/07 he worked as a Leibniz professor at the University of Leipzig. He also spent many years teaching at the PhD School of the University of Pécs. During his outstanding career he was a guest professor at numerous universities world-wide (USA, Austria, Finland). His board memberships include Honorary President of the Hungarian Wittgenstein Society and the Advisory Board Member in the Forschungsstelle für österreichische Philisophie (Graz, Austria).

Honorary doctor of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Pécs since 12 March 2009.

Professor Nguyen Huu Ninh is an internationally recognized environment researcher, director of the Centre for Environmental Research, Education and Development who has made an extraordinary contribution to the research into climate change. He received a Nobel Peace Prize in 2007 as a member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Organization. It is important to mention that he speaks Hungarian quite well, as he completed his studies in Hungary, at the University of Szeged from 1971 to 1977. Then he stayed in Hungary at the Centre for Biology of Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Szeged as a scholarship holder of UNESCO and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He spent more than half a year in the Institute for Biophysical Research in Pécs.

After receiving his scientific degree, he visited many research institues all over the world (USA, Thailand, Japan, Philippines, China, Bangladesh, Australia, Brazil, India, Korea, England, Spain, Hawaii, etc.) and represented Vietnam in every important environmental programme. He was known world-wide as the Travelling Ambassador of Vietnam. He returned to Szeged in 2001 as a guest researcher. During his many activities he also took part in the work of every council of the International Geosphere, Biosphere Program which coordinates the most important global changes of the Earth and where he met academician József Tigyi, who represents our country in that organization. Besides many international achievements Nguyen Huu Ninh has produced remarkable scientific work and published 85 scientific essays and environmental reports.

Professor Stefanie Bode-Böger graduated from the Medical University of Hannover (Medizinische Hochschule Hannover - MHH) in 1990. In the same year she received the title of dr.med./MD in the Institute for Clinical Pharmacology of the Medical University of Hannover. She received her medical license in 1992. Then she spent one year as a resident at the Vascular Surgery Department of the Medical Center, MHH (K. Alexander). After her postgraduate studies on Public Health at the Medical University of Hannover in 1995 and 1996, she was a DFG fellow at the Stanford University School of Medicine, Falk Cardiovascular Research Center (J.C. Cooke). In late 1997 she became a specialist in clinical pharmacology.

In 1998 she received the honorary degree of "Magistra Sanitatis Publicae" and Venia Legendi in the field of clinical pharmacology and was appointed deputy director of the Institute for Clinical Pharmacology of the University of Hannover. She has been the director of the Institute for Clinical Pharmacology of the Medical Faculty of the Otto von Guericke University since 2002. In 2003 she was elected to be a board member in the German Society of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapy.

Honorary doctor of the Faculty of Law, the University of Pécs.

Professor Ulrich Sieber began his academic career at the University of Freiburg/ Germany, where he earned his doctoral degree as well. For some time he worked as a private attorney-at-law, and later he completed his habilitation on the relationship between substantive criminal law and criminal procedure. He was a professor at the University of Bayreuth, at the University of Würzburg, where he was dean of the Faculty of Law for a year, and at the University of Munich. Since 2003 he has been the director of the renowned Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law in Freiburg.

Prof. Sieber ‘s research and teaching career have flourished since the ‘80s; he is one of the most well-known authorities on organized crime, terrorism, economic crime and cybercrime, as well as on comparative criminal law, European criminal law and international criminal law. He has more than 150 scientific publications, many of which have been translated into foreign languages. The primary focus of his research is the territorial and functional limits of criminal law in the prosecution of new types of transnational and complex crime.

The Criminal Law Department of the Faculty of Law, the University of Pécs and the Department of Criminal Law at the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law maintain a more than three decade-long successful scientific cooperation in the framework of which a special German language summer course on Criminal Law is offered every year to young researchers in Central Europe.

Honorary doctor of the Faculty of Business and Economics, the University of Pécs.

Professor Volker Arnold graduated from the University of Göttingen, Germany. After successfully completing his studies in economics he worked at the department of the world-famous professor Hesse. The main research field of Professor Arnold is public finance. He publishes his findings in leading professional journals that are known and recognized internationally.

From the 1978 establishment of the University of Hagen (FernUniversität in Hagen) Professor Volker Arnold has been the Head of the Faculty of Economics. Owing to his great professional knowledge and to his open attitude towards other countries and cultures, the German Federal State asked him in the ‘90s to develop the framework for an international double-degree programme.

The University of Hagen and the University of Pécs have been partners since 2001. Since then more than 50 students have earned the master level double-degree that is equivalent with the German as well as with the Hungarian business and economic degree. The Faculty of Business and Economics of the University of Pécs has become one of the most important partners of the University of Hagen, the leading university in distance education operating in the spirit of a united Europe.

Professor Walter Zsilincsar graduated from the University of Graz, where he studied geography, English language and literature, philosphy and psychology. He worked as assistant professor at the Department of Geography, the University of Graz, and later he became senior lecturer. From 1983 to 2000 he was the Head of the Department of Applied Geography and since 1983 he has been professor of Geography at the University of Graz.

During his outstanding career he was a guest professor at many universities world-wide (USA, Slovenia, Austria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary) and has been granted several awards and fellowships for his professionalism, including: the Research Fellowship of the Austrian Ministry of Sciences and Research, the Research Award of the Province Styria (Austria), just to name a few. He is also an Honorary Member of the Hungarian Geographical Society. He maintained close professional contacts with a dozen universities worldwide. His research fields include political geography and media relations, remote sensing methods in space research, regional and space research, geographical issues of waste and sewage disposal.

Professor Zsilincsar is proud of his Hungarian roots: his father was born in Hungary; however he could not learn to speak Hungarian. Nevertheless he honoured the audience of the University of Pécs with a short presentation of his inaugural address in Hungarian.
